Warm, cosy atmosphere. The restaurant is situated in an old coaching inn, about 6 miles to the south east of Cambridge City Centre.Food is of high standards and the service friendly.

First visit fine - I was with my husband and we ate a la carte. Second visit with my daughter who's moving to Fowlmere and we asked for a bar/sandwich menu and were made to feel as if had crawled out from under a stone. We were directed to the pub 'next door' where we would be able to 'buy chips'. Needless to say we thought the service and ambience were lousy.

We had a meal for two and the food was excellent, cooked to how we asked. It was a great place to go for a relaxed quiet meal, and the old oak beamed ceiling and brass pots on the walls just gave it that extra touch.

Chequers, sitting on their laurels? - review added on Fri 20th Aug 2004

I'm sure it's lovely food, but I had a pretty snotty reception on the phone when making a booking. It hardly creates a welcoming impression. Maybe it was a bad time... Maybe you don't need more customers??

Good food but - review added on Thu 12th May 2005

We had a lovely meal (a dinner for 12), but one snide remark on the way out killed it stone dead. Sorry, but never again.

Worth travelling for the food and the garden - review added on Fri 26th Aug 2005

Apart from the fact that they wouldn't do chips for kids, the food was hugely assured and very impressive - would put many a London gastropub to shame. The kitchen is superbly well organised and the beer is well-kept.Lovely ambience in the well-kept garden on a warm day, too - shame you have to go indoors and queue at the cramped bar to order food and drinks! Would benefit from improved service and better front-of-house organisation.

Not such a warm welcome - review added on Tue 3rd Jun 2008

Having heard of this place my wife and I went the weekend of 1st June 08. The reception was luke warm. The landlord was less than welcoming, bordering on arrogant, the food selection looked expensive and when we asked for crisps or nuts while we perused the menu the landlord scoffed. Whilst the pub looked clean and the surrounding pretty I felt it was trying too hard and the menu overly expensive (£12 for vegetarian asparagus sticks!). So we went elsewhere and the landlord missed out on my £60 mainly because of the attitude displayed. Overall verdict- tries to be something it is not. It is a pub , has the feel of a pub yet is priced like a chic restaurant. Not my cup of tea I am afraid!
