Customer Reviews for Gert and Henry - York

Great food, very friendly Italian staff, a bit busy on a Sat lunchtime. - review added on Sat 31st Jan 2004

I was a bit surprised how un-english this resterant is considering the elizabethan oak beamed building with sloping floors; the menu specialises in fish dished and a selection of Italian pastas and deserts. The staff were great in that loud Italian way and were very welcoming. We had trout and salmon, both were great.

Misguided Combinations, Pushy Staff. - review added on Tue 21st Nov 2006

I have never been compelled to write a review on any of the restaurants I have been to, but Gert and Henry’s has unfortunately got me to the keyboard.I like my food unusual, but the combinations are quite misguided. Sauces and other accompanying food that came with my dishes were so overpowering that I could not taste the dish properly – eg plum and apple chutney was so sweet that even the blackpudding starter was nullified, and the suckling pig had a strange sweet lemon&herb sauce that again overpowered the dish. Overly fussy combinations, however adventurous, which simply did not work and the meal was left unfinished.Any redeeming qualities? Not the service, I’m afraid. We were constantly being pressed. Having sat back to finish a bottle of wine we were rudely interrupted at the table by the waiter trying to rush us out with a blunt “Good night, good bye then!” even though we had not finished, it was still early, and there was certainly no queue for tables.Recommended? Nice setting, but overall no. Very disappointing.

We booked a table for 21:30 on a Saturday night - they assured us that a late booking would be OK. Upon arriving the head waiter excitedly hurried us to order, telling us the kitchens would close at 22:00. We did book a smoking table, which the head waiter practically accused my partner of being mistaken - he insisted we had booked a non-smoking table. After moving us the main course was hurriedly lined up after the starter. Upon finishing the mains the head water asked me if I wanted sweet as he wanted to send the cook home! The head waiter was also rude to my partner when I went to move the car closer to the restaurant - he was all smiles when I returned. It would transpire that the restaurant staff has arranged a night out and appeared to want to close up by 10:15 latest! They should not have so willingly accepted our booking for 21:30 had they wanted to close early. I do not like being rushed by restaurant staff on any night out, but this meal was supposed to be in celebration of my 36th Birthday. Would I recommend it - not sure - I definitely would not recommend a late evening booking!
