Excellent Restaurant - review added on Tue 10th Jul 2001
We visited the Blue Bicycle in November 2000. Everthing was perfect from the minute we walked in to the minute we left. We were so impressed that we are returning in December this year to celebrate a very special birthday.I had mussels for starters and they were probably the best I have had in England. My main course was poached salmon which was cooked to perfection.My husband had duck for his starter and beef wellington for his main course. He was very impressed with both.This is one of the nicest restaurants in the UK and that is why we are returning in December and not going to London.

Me and my boyfriend spent our first Valentines evening here. It was a total surprise and I have to admit, I'd never eaten there before (although I live about a five minute walk away!)The atmosphere was lovely - dimmed lights, romantic music, glass of champagne on arrival. Even thought it was packed, we still felt like we were the only ones there.The meal was excellent. I ate lignuine with field mushrooms and lobster oil, he had the Moules Mariniere. Then for main I had salmon with a black olive crust on lemon risotto and he had the seabass. Had a wonderful bottle of champagne but were too full for the deserts.I can thouroughly recommend this eatery to anyone wanting great food in York. Do book though to avoid dissapointment!

What a shame! We spent a long and pleasant weekend in York and tried unsuccessfully to book a table at the Blue Bicycle for the Saturday so settled for the Sunday evening - obviously a popular restaurant. My starter was everything I expected it to be – a light double baked Yorkshire blue soufflé – a really good start. Spoiled only by the fact that the wine delivered (a Macon-Chardonnay) was neither the year nor the vineyard described in the wine list and delivered without explanation or apology.The Blue Bicycle fish stew promised a lot but turned out to be barely edible. Lumps fish wallowing amongst chunks of raw onion and pepper in an entirely tasteless sauce. The Chef(?) may have just got away with combining bitter green pepper with fish if he/she had sautéed the vegetable first but this fish stew simply didn’t work – and apparently I wasn’t the only customer to think so.The pudding course was unremarkable – a fairly bland tarte limon – but the accompanying pudding wine had been hanging around in an opened bottle far too long. I couldn’t drink it.To cap it all, the not inexpensive bill arrived with a 10% service charge added and I was then asked to add an additional tip by the waiting staff! Apparently the 10% service charge is for The Management!Added together, the problems with wine, main course, desert wine and “service charge” resulted in an evening which moved from vaguely irritating to downright disappointing. I don’t usually complain in a restaurant but this was an exception. Perhaps Sunday is not the night to visit this restaurant – it’s certainly an experience I would not recommend anyone else to repeat.
