Levi Root's Loveapple Tomato Sauce
Levi Root's Loveapple Tomato Sauce - £2.99
Price on 04-Jun-08 from Scorchio.
What the bottle says... Here's another little treat from my kitchen: Loveapple Sauce. Blended from sun-ripened tomatoes and chilli, it's a traditional Jamaican condiment with a kick. My family have been making it for years and the exact recipe's a Roots family secret. But like my Reggae, Reggae, sauce, it's too good not to share. You can use it as a marinade for tasty spare ribs or chicken drumsticks... or add a bit of Jamaican sunshine to traditional British fare by spahsing a healthy dollop on your mash, burger or BLT. It makes a perfect dip for prawns, potato wedges (or even your fingers!). Go... tune into the flavours and put some music into your food. Enjoy! What we say... The man made famous by BBC's Dragon's Den, has brought Jamaican flavours to the UK's attention. However, don't be put off by Levi's celebratory status and slightly cheesy strapline, his sauces are based on family recipes going back 35 years. Lots of people try to add a spicy twist to the classic tomato ketchup but few succeed. Levi's Loveapple Tomato Sauce is a winner though. It's got just enough heat and Jamaican spice to ensuree that it's as at home on a British fry up as it is on something more exotic. Country of origin: United Kingdom Ingredients: water, sugar, tomato purree, barley malt vinegar, tomatoes,  modified starch maize, salt, red scotch bonnet chilli, basil, allspice, bay leaf, tomato flavouring 295g bottle

Mrs HS Ball's Extra Hot Chutney
Mrs HS Ball's Extra Hot Chutney - £2.99
Price on 04-Jun-08 from Scorchio.
What the bottle says... Prepared from the very best South African products. What we say... The bottle doesn't give much away so we did a bit of research... 'The name chutney was adopted from a Hindi word in India, chatni, meaning 'made from fresh fruit and spices". Used mainly as a marinade and a table sauce, undoubtably the most famous South African Chutney is Mrs Balls. In 1865 Mrs. Ball was born as Amelia Alice Elizabeth Adkins in Fort Jackson, East London, the same town where her Canadian parents were stranded in 1852 on their way to Australia. According to records her father, Henry James Adkins, captain of the SS Quanza, and his wife, Sarah Spalding, left the coastal town, Nova Scotia in Canada for Australia. Although the boat was lost off the coast of East London, fortunately for future generations of South Africans, the captain, his wife and her chutney recipe survived. It was here that their daughter, Amelia Adkins, was born thirteen years later. She married Herbert Saddleton Ball in Fort Jackson, and was thereafter known as Mrs. Ball. Both Mrs. Ball and her sister, Florence received the secret chutney recipe from their mother, who in turn got it from her mother. Mrs. Ball started making the chutney after she moved to Johannesburg with her husband and seven children. Her friends and family loved it so much that the business started blossoming on its own. The demand increased; Mrs Ball cooked and her husband bottled. Home Industries started selling her chutney and by 1918 she sold about 24 bottles a day, which in the years to come grew to 8,000 bottles a day. They settled in Plumstead (where her husband took over the chutney cooking). He died in 1935 and she moved to Fish Hoek where she continued to make chutney in her backyard with the help of her grandson, "Uncle Bob" ' ...and the rest as they say is history. Country of Origin: South Africa Ingredients: sugar, water, vinegar, peaches, apricots, chillies, modified maize starch, salt, worcestershire sauce, colour 470g Bottle
