Liquorice Wands - Bassetts have stopped making liquorice pipes and replaced them with liquorice wands - Don`t ask us why! Wands are twisted liquorice with sweet bits on the end (just like pipes really!) that make them look all magical! So, if you`re a Harry Potter fan, you can take one of these and pretend it`s got stacks of magic powers - or you can chomp it down (`cos they`re jolly good!)

Liquorice Wands - Bassetts have stopped making liquorice pipes and replaced them with liquorice wands - Don`t ask us why! Listen to this for a priceless bit of trivia:According to our in-house sweet anorak, the Pontefract Cake (aka Pomfret Cake, or Yorkshire Penny) with the imprint of Pontefract Castle has been around since 1614!Originally, they were only made in Pontefract (that`s near Leeds). . . bad weather didn`t matter too much because they used the liquorice root.And listen to this. . . liquorice is such a big deal in Pontefract, that there is now an annual Liquorice Festival celebrated!How cool is that?! Other bits of Pontefract Cake trivia:- - Up to the 1960s all Pontefract Cakes were made by hand- A Pontefract Cake maker was known as a Caker or Thumper- In 1955 a caker was paid 4 pence a tray, with each tray holding 280 cakes

Sherbet Fountains - One of our favourite sweets ever, and such a classic. If you need your memory jogging, they consist of a yellow tube filled with white zingy sherbet. They used to be in a cardboard tube and have the liquorice stick poking out, but the whole shebang is now encased in plastic. In my time you were supposed to be able to suck the sherbet through the liquorice stick/straw, but I never managed this as it got all soggy and gooey. I would knock most of the sherbet back neat, and then finish the liquorice off by dipping in the remaining sherbet. It was totally ace!
