Gan Bei is now Jade, well worth a visit! - review added on Mon 26th Feb 2007
This restaurant changed hands some time ago and is now called Jade. The price for food is fixed - roughly £9.00 a head Mon - Thurs and £13.00 a head Fri - Sun, plus service charge. For this you can order from a menu with over 120 different dishes! Although this would normally put me off, after the initial trepidatious visit, we have eaten there many times and have always had good value for money. They buy in the crispy duck, which is a breast and tender but not very crispy, but make up for it up on other dishes, some of which I've not seen elsewhere, i.e. salt and pepper green beans, a starter which is like crispy chilli beef but made with duck and hoi sin sauce. The staff are very friendly, always make you welcome, and as long as you don't take the mickey and eat the food, you can order as many dishes as you want. We took our friend for a surprise 50th on Saturday. The staff told me to leave the decorations I had bought (balloons etc)and they decorated the table and surrounding area for us. The eight of us had a wonderful time, and the food was simply scrummy. Special mention for spare rib starter in honey and soy, beautifully tender and full of flavour. Thoroughly recommended.
