Disappointed! - review added on Mon 8th Jul 2002
My son, his girlfriend, my husband and I passed the Charterhouse Hooden at Godalming quite by chance on Sunday. The place was quite welcoming, although seemed a little run down. The bar staff was helpful and our drinks and order were dealt with in timely fashion. However, although my husband was satisfied with his burger and my son and girlfriend were fairly happy with their chicken fajitas, my steak dish was a problem. It sizzled very nicely when brought to the table but was found to be very greasy and, unfortunately, the french fries had been cooked in oil normally reserved for more pungent fry-ups. Consequently there was a very odd taste to the dish.I thought the price for four drinks and the food at approximately £10 per head was very fair, but the most expensive dish (the steak) was a complete disappointment.I was not offered any recompense for the disappointment experienced, which I felt was wrong, and since I had pre-paid it seemed I had no recourse. I was given a free coffee upon asking whether the server thought it appropriate. In addition, the cook was not very well turned out, a little untidy and unkept looking, which made me question whether he took care with the preparation of the dishes.I would not return to this venue to eat again.

Under new management - review added on Mon 24th Nov 2003
I would like to let people know that we ate in The Charterhouse this weekend and what an amzing suprise! The pub is under new management and has been refurbished as well as new menu, wine lists etc. The staff were amazingly helpful and friendly and the food was of the best quality pub food I have tasted for a long time! The pub was packed out and we had to wait a while for a table to come free. This place has been amazingly transformed and ladies you HAVE to see the loo! A revolving seat as well as all the things us ladies occasionally need free of charge!I understand the new owners are Ashley and Andy and they also have two new chefs - who really know their stuff. We in fact booked to return for an evening meal the next night and once again we had an great evening, a friendly, lively and dance filled evening with brilliant food, service and company!Well done Andy and Ashley - everyone needs to know about your pub!

I live near this pub. In the last 6 months it has been comletley re-vamped by new owners. I also have known the pub as my local for 9 years. It has been transformed by the new owners to the most delightful pub around Godalming. The atmosphere and ambience in this now clean, tasteful upmarket and the original pub is superb. We had a candlelit meal for 4 people last Saturday night. The meal and friendly service was out of this world. We heard they had a great chef. Believe me, they have. The pub is worth a visit just to see the ladies loos.

Revamped and better ... needs to be consistent - review added on Fri 11th Jun 2004
Good menu - nice people (especially Ashley). Service (when Asley not around) a bit hit or miss on the food. We go every Friday instead of cooking so its bearable.

Extra Cream Sauce - review added on Thu 16th Sep 2004
Having been turned away from almost every eatery in the area, quite by chance, we drove past the Charterhouse. After reading the sign that said "a wine bar kind of a pub"my partner Fabian and I decided it was just what we were looking for. As we drove into the tight car park behind the pub we noticed you could see in the kitchen. This only served to whet our appetite even more, as the chef was a real dish himself! As we went in we were surprised to see that the clientele were as welcoming as the handsome barman himself. He sat Fabian and me down in a romantic corner and went to fetch our drinks, which is when I noticed his delightfully pert bottom! We had a delicious starter of seared tuna, followed by a rump steak cooked to perfection. We didn't have room for dessert as the portions were so ample (much like the barman's). We washed this all down with a dry yet fruity house white. I enjoyed every second of our evening at the Charterhouse and will definitely go back for more. The evening just got better and better. Thanks to the barman I could not contain myself any longer and had to rush poor Fabian home!

Perfect decent food, good atmosphere - review added on Thu 28th Oct 2004
Been here a fair few times after defecting from the nearby Cricketers that has gone right down hill lately. Service was very slow but very friendly. Food was good to excellent. The menu is a little limited and they could do with a star dish that you'd always want. Its only because of the limited menu that I wouldn't go back too often as after 4 or 5 visits, you've done everything. Also, they really need a decent coffee machine as the filter stuff really is 80s pub quality.Atmosphere was great and most were in the 25 to 45 age group.
