Villa Fiori Bianco
Villa Fiori Bianco - £5.49
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
A smooth, clean and ripe white made during the fantastic 2006 vintage, using the indigenous Italian variety Cataratto, as well as Graciano and Chardonnay grapes, sourced mainly from Sicily - a region that is fast developing a sound reputation for producing some of Italy's most flavoursome wines. Dynamic young winemaker Scipione Giuliani was keen to make a blend he liked - subject to our approval - and not be constrained by appellation laws, hence the Vino di Tavola tag. Don't be fooled, though, it's anything but Vino di Tavola in taste! ''Packed with racy citrus and delicate blossom flavours, developing on the palate to include ripe peach. Fresh and uplifting, it's an excellent lunchtime aperitif wine, as well as making a great partner to fresh fish platters.''

Monte Viejo Macabeo 2006
Monte Viejo Macabeo 2006 - £5.49
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Officially classed as ''very good'', La Mancha's 2006 vintage gives this ripe Macabeo tons of intense apricot flavour. Complex and well-balanced, it's a fantastic value alternative to pricier white Rioja. The Macabeo variety is not very widespread in Castilla although its popularity is increasing. It is said to owe its name to the Maccabee tribe mentioned in the Bible and seems to have originated in the Ebro basin near Rioja. During harvest the Macabeo grapes were picked very early in the morning and taken to the pressing station immediately to preserve freshness. There they are pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks at low temperature guaranteeing the fresh, aromatic nose you encounter the moment you draw the cork. Crisp, with slight floral hints and abundant tropical fruit aromas, Monte Viejo Macabeo is a perfect easy drinking white. Ideal as an aperitif, or with seafood salads and white fish.

La Renardiere Chardonnay 2003
La Renardiere Chardonnay 2003 - £5.69
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
This lightly oaked Chardonnay is named after one of the parcels of vines that makes up the blend, ''La Renardiere''. The land in turn, takes its name from the many foxes that live wild in the area. The wine is made by the Vignerons de la Noelle, whose cellar is in Ancenis, half way between Nantes and Angers. The cellar was founded in 1952 and the wine is made by Franck David, who studied locally and has worked in both Muscadet and Sancerre - he is very much a white wine specialist. The cellar is very well equipped with the latest technology which enables them to bring out the extremely expressive aromas of fruit and white flowers.

Tallowwood Creek Colombard 2005 - £5.69
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
If you want something crisp, fruity and very sippable, then Tallowwood Creek Colombard is just the tipple ... almost Sauvignon-like in style but not so over powering. Tallowwood is part of the Beelgara Estate in the centre of New South Wales's Riverina wine region. Founded over 60 years ago it is now owned and run by dynamic winemaker Bob Berton who has invested heavily in both the cellar and the vineyards. And the Colombard grape - originally from France's rural Gascony where it was used to make Armagnac - produces mouthwatering, citrussy whites like this, under the Aussie sun. Light straw in colour, juicy tropical fruit with hints of freshly sliced green pepper notes. Perfect with Thai chicken curry.

Wildekloof Colombard 2005
Wildekloof Colombard 2005 - £5.69
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
South Africa now matches the Loire Valley for vibrant, zesty whites of sheer quality and flavour and is still unbeatable for value. This deliciously fresh white comes from the winery that won the most awards at the Veritas competition last year (Veritas is South Africa's most prestigious wine competition). In fact, it was made by a young winemaker who's just won a coveted Champion Chenin Trophy too! Lively citrus fruit aromas leap from the glass. Waves of zingy lemon and green apple freshness lead to a terrifically pure finish. Fantastic as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to grilled salmon steak or a crisp green salad.

Quinta do Casal Branco Fern?o Pires 2005
Quinta do Casal Branco Fern?o Pires 2005 - £5.69
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
From the native Fern?o Pires, an arrestingly, perfumed white grape grown along the River Tagus, this citrus-charged white is the perfect choice for everyday drinking. The temperate climate by the River Tagus makes Ribatejano one of the key wine regions in Portugal - home of the oldest appellation system in the world. Flowers, apple and spice aromas with lime and tropical fruit flavours. Elegantly refreshing. Ideal as an aperitif or with grilled fish and Asian cuisine.

Domaine la Cigaliere 2004
Domaine la Cigaliere 2004 - £5.69
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Situated in the Haut-Minervois in the foothills of the Pyrenees, Domaine de la Cigaliere is an extensive estate with a glorious position. Pine forests and the herbal garrigue surround the vines and lend the grapes a wild thyme and rosemary edge. Made from the local grape varieties, Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, this is the kind of wine that has earned the Languedoc its reputation as 'one of the undiscovered bastions of delicious, value-packed wines'(Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate). Ruby red with spicy, ripe blackberry aromas. Rich, velvety mouthful of fleshy black fruits with a twist of spice and herbs. Superb with ratatouille or cassoulet.

Domaine La Commanderie 2004
Domaine La Commanderie 2004 - £5.69
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Richly concentrated thanks to miserly yields from gnarled 75-year-old vines - this mouthfilling red is laden with juicy blackberry and mulberry flavours. It's from a highly rated Baylion-Gorand family estate, located near Perpignan, deep in France's sunny south. Made from the local grape varieties, Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, this is the kind of wine that has earned the Languedoc its reputation as 'one of the undiscovered bastions of delicious, value-packed wines'(Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate). ''Deep ruby colour. Attractive nose of blackberry and currant fruit with spicy undertones. The palate is well structured with silky tannins and excellent concentration of ripe berry fruit. The finish is long and fruity.''

San Cristobal
San Cristobal - £5.69
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Strict rules govern yields in Spain's most famous wine region, and in bountiful vintages it's traditional to label a portion of the delicious result simply as Vino de Mesa. Hence the low price of this silky red from Rioja's top quality enclave of Alavesa. Deliciously soft and juicy in style, brimming with vibrant, ripe redcurrant and forest fruit flavours. (San Cristobal is five-star vintage Rioja in the bottle, just not on the label ... a genuine bargain!)

Brezza Bianca
Brezza Bianca - £5.69
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Each year in northern Italy's Fruili region - regardless of how great the vintage is - only a fixed amount of wine can be labeled Grave del Friuli DOC. Never ones to let great things go to waste, we asked our favourite Pinot Grigio cellar to rescue their finest 'declassified' fruit and make you a truly mouthwatering white. ''Fresh and mouthwatering with enticing aromas and crisp citrus flavours. Delicious with shrimps, salmon or - for the more adventurous - chicken with ginger''

Vega Oliveras Macabeo 2007
Vega Oliveras Macabeo 2007 - £5.69
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
La Mancha is an up-and-coming region south of Madrid and is known as the country's New World. It's attracting big name investment because of the abundant, remote land and seriously old vines - the sort that would cost far more in Rioja. Made from 100% Macabeo - the great white grape of Rioja - this minerally-fresh white is bursting with elegant stone fruit flavours. Superb with seafood tapas or as a cool, refreshing glass on its own!

Poggio di Ettore
Poggio di Ettore - £5.69
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Here's a savvy tip for fans of smooth, soft reds. It's a cherry-scented Italian charmer from Gold medal-winning winemaker (and old friend) Ettore Galasso. Ettore only makes this during bumper harvests when strict laws limit the production of his flagship Gold-medal Montepulciano. In the past, he used to keep aside a few bottles for his personal consumption selling the rest for blending, but thanks to his close working relationship with our senior buyer Thomas Woolrych, he now reserves the lot for us! This lusciously smooth, ripe Montepulciano was bottled without oak ageing so all of the fleshy, cherry fruit flavours shine through. It's smooth enough to enjoy on its own, or with a variety of simple pasta dishes.
