XVI du President 2006
XVI du President 2006 - £8.09
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
High in the Catalan hills of southern France everything struggles to survive ... although this means low yields from the struggling vines, the grapes that are produced are seriously concentrated and packed with flavour. The 2006 vintage was particularly fine, with hot sunny days, but deliciously cool nights and this year the Grenache grapes gave a magnificently opulent dark, luxuriously smooth wine. The wine was destined for big, powerful, and ever-popular, XV du President. But, as some of the ancient vines actually yielded fruit well over the 15% alcohol level, in 2006 the winemaker decided to vinify it separately and make a limited edition wine - rechristened XVI - as these BIG bottles weigh in at an awesome 16%. Seriously good stuff!

Trophy-winning winemaker De Wet Lategan's estate in the Breede River valley is spectacular. With a beautiful mountain backdrop and flocks of white egrets make the vineyards picture-perfect. ''Complex aromas and flavours of buttered toast, caramel and zesty citrus. A ripe, powerful wine - ideal with roast chicken or rich, creamy dishes''

Chateau Bourdillot

Seven Rivers Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2007
Seven Rivers Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2007 - £8.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
One sip of Seven Rivers Old Vine Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2007 and you'll see why New Zealand's winemakers are looking nervously at a stunning, cool climate region in Chile's deep south, Bio Bio. This is delicious stuff - astoundingly fresh, with abundant guava, gooseberry and cut grass flavours. Just what you'd expect of the #10-a-bottle, top-notch Sauvignons of Marlborough's boutique estates. Unlike the rest of Chile, Bio Bio (which means 'big big' in the lingo of the local Mapuche tribe) has a large river and waterfall system. Its cooler climate delivers a crisp, mineral freshness akin to France's Loire (home to those great Sauvignons of Sancerre) but also boasts that trademark fruit purity only Chile's endless sunshine makes possible. And old vines deliver an extra intensity thanks to their lower yields. Then there's the vintage. One of Chile's most acclaimed and medal-laden winemakers, Ignacio Recabarren, believes 2007 ''will accomplish the highest scores in the history of Chilean wine''. Certainly we think it's the best vintage of a generation ... and the Emiliana winery is one of Chile's most exciting (it's the leading organic producer in all South America). A genuine steal ... order now! ''Thrilling cut grass and gooseberry aromas, with mouthwatering guava and pure tropical fruit flavours so typical of Chile - plus a tongue-tingling minerality you'd normally associate with top-notch Loire whites. Perfect with seafood and goat's cheese ... and no excuse needed to enjoy a glass or two on its own!''

And unlike many of its counterparts, it's unoaked to let the exotic fruit flavours shine through. Pure, fresh aromas of ripe peach and hints of apricot and white musk. Bodegas Navarro Lopez Gran Reserva 1999
Bodegas Navarro Lopez Gran Reserva 1999 - £8.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Family-run Bodegas Navarro Lopez has developed a strong reputation for producing top quality wines since it was founded in 1904. The bodega is consistently praised by national and international wine experts alike and their winemaker, Javier Mu?oz, has clocked up no less than twelve Gold medals in the last five years alone. Little surprise then that their 1999 Gran Reserva was given a remarkable 88 points by super-critic Robert Parker, and notched up a highly-sought after Silver medal at a 2007 US wine competition. The secrets behind the wine's success are the wonderfully concentrated, hand-picked Tempranillo grapes grown in Valdepe?as - Spain's oldest wine region - and the long period spent mellowing in oak barrels. ''Delightfully smooth, bursting with ripe red berry and vanilla aromas, with hints of tobacco and leather. Rich and complex, the finish is long and spicy. Partner with roast lamb or hearty casseroles.''

Le Sommet Viognier 2005
Le Sommet Viognier 2005 - £8.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Spicy, full bodied French Viognier from the Ardeche region - an isolated area that is rarely visited outside the Summer months, when it becomes an adventure playground for tourists interested in water sports. Although little known, the Ardeche is home to some seriously good wines made using similar grape varieties as those found in the neighbouring Rhone Valley. Viognier is most famous in classic Rhone white Condrieu, which often sells for #15-#20 a bottle. Here, the Cave de Valvigneres - an award-winning cellar - have crafted a wine that mirrors the creamy, fresh apricot, honey and spice flavours of a top Condrieu ... yet for a much more appealing price! This is a rich, oak-aged white with a creamy texture, flavours of apricots, honey and hazelnuts, and notes of spicy vanilla. Enjoy with rich fish dishes, roast chicken or pheasant. 12.5% vol. Drink by the end of 2007.

Sentiero Sauvignon Blanc 2004
Sentiero Sauvignon Blanc 2004 - £8.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Named after the spiral footpath that snakes its way through the vineyards, visible from the main road that runs from Verona to Trento, and on to the Brenner Pass, Sentiero Sauvignon Blanc is made by the Concilio winery ... which has a history of winemaking in the Trentino Alto Adige region since 1860. Although proud of its heritage, the winery uses the modern stainless steel winemaking equipment to retain the maximum aroma and flavour in the wine. Fresh and nettle-scented, with a hint of blackcurrant leaf and fresh, lemony flavours. Delightfully crisp and refreshing, this is delicious drunk on its own or with grilled trout & toasted almonds, or taglietelle with fresh basil and plum tomatoes.

Sentiero Riesling 2005
Sentiero Riesling 2005 - £8.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.

Sentiero is named after the spiral footpath that snakes its way through the vineyard, visible from the road running from Verona to Trento. With warm days and cool nights, the vineyards are ideal for creating crisp, aromatic white wines. Invigorating mountain air helps give this dry Riesling a fresh mouthwatering appeal. Bright and appetising with crisp flavours of green apple, a touch of lime and tongue-tingling freshness. Like all great Riesling, classic petrol edges lie in wait to develop. Enjoy as an aperitif, or serve with streamed fresh asparagus or grilled fish with a light herb sauce.

Pascal Bouchard Les Ouvrees 2005
Pascal Bouchard Les Ouvrees 2005 - £8.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Recommended by France's wine-buying bible, Le Guide Hachette, this superb white Burgundy is very much in a Chablis mould. Pascal uses Chardonnay grapes sourced exclusively from his vineyards in Auxerre just west of Chablis. The town of Auxerre is steeped in history - there were vineyards running up to the wall of the town as long ago as AD680! Today the Cotes d'Auxerre has seen a revival, although its principle market remains Paris. Pale straw colour with generous aromas of peach, apple and a hint of hay. Minerally, citrus flavours balance broader peach and butter notes.

Falaises de Cucugnan 2002
Falaises de Cucugnan 2002 - £8.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Here's your chance to enjoy the magnificent fruits of a special 'project' from the Sichel family of Chateau Palmer. Their quality-obsessed #70-a-bottle winemaking standards put them on a par with Latour, Lafite and Mouton Rothschild (rigorous fruit selection, the best toasted oak barrels and an ancient understanding of wine and the land). The deep, rich grapes of the vineyards of the remote hills of Corbieres have long been sought after to add flavour and body to lighter wines. In the excellent 2001 vintage there was even more depth of flavour and colour to delight the Palmer winemakers. The result is a seductive, expensive-tasting wine with rich ruby colour and intense aromas of warm spices and plums. Refined red fruit flavours lead to a very long length. Will drink perfectly on its own now or as a partner to wild boar or rich lamb dishes - sophistication and sun in one bottle!

Laithwaite Syrah 2002
Laithwaite Syrah 2002 - £8.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Here's a red we've been patiently ageing for four years, waiting for its rich, dark plum and blackcurrant flavours to develop. One sip and you'll be glad we did! It's a classic French Syrah, with all the refinement and elegance of ageing, but with none of the mouth-puckering tannins ... just oodles of soft, dark and well-developed fruit. To do this we enlisted the talents of trophy-winning winemaker Celine Rousseau. Warming mouthfuls of rich, sweet spice and jammy black fruit are the order of the day here. Well-structured and very mellow, this is a fine choice for dinner parties. Top-end Syrah, cellared for you, and ready for drinking!

Castillo de Jumilla Reserva 2002
Castillo de Jumilla Reserva 2002 - £8.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Concentrated and Mediterranean in character, Castillo de Jumilla Reserva is made from 100% Monastrell grapes - a variety indigenous to the region and perfectly adapted to the climate. With very little humidity, the generally disease-free vines flourish, giving berries with very high sugar concentrations in relation to the water content ... full, fruity wines are the delicious result. Ripe red and black berry flavours, with a smooth, slightly spicy finish. Perfect with chorizo sausage or firm cheeses.

Palacio de Valdeinfante 1997
Palacio de Valdeinfante 1997 - £8.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Nowhere else in the world will you encounter glorious, mature reds with such affordable price tags. Spain really in unique. But to find these venerable old bottles you have to put in the miles. One reason why few other wine merchants offer them. You will be absolutely bowled over by this 10 year-old beauty (dozens of international wine judges were!) and so we recommend you purchase by the case. Crafted from the fruit of ancient vines in the wild west of Spain by the Portuguese border, this magnificent red has laid undisturbed in cool underground cellars for years. Over that time it has acquired rare complexity, incomparable smoothness and mellowness of flavour you would normally have pay dearly to experience. Rich berry fruit swathed in luxury vanilla oak with hints of tobacco, plums and cloves. It's surprisingly versatile too. Try it with mixed charcuterie and fresh crusty bread or reserve for formal dishes such as roast leg of lamb or pigeon breast. Either way, don't miss it.

Monasterio de Tentudia 1997
Monasterio de Tentudia 1997 - £8.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Made in the ancient enclave of Extremadura, down near the border with Portugal ... where the Iglesias Schlegel family see to it that tradition and quality thrive side by side. Isolated from the cut and thrust of the modern wine trade - there are rich rewards to be had for those who put in the miles. Though remote this phenomenally well-accoladed estate is famous throughout Spain, yet the family's Rioja-rivalling quality remains an insider's secret in the UK. Ageing is a house speciality, this tiny volume, private reserve is matured in barrels for 18 months followed by a long siesta in bottle. Brilliant ruby-red colour with aromas of dark fruit, spices and coffee. Ample mouthfuls of mellow blackcurrant and smooth vanilla flavours. Elegant and expressive. Great with duck and lamb.
