Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
A rich fruity blend of Cabernet and Carmenere from a new winery in the heart of the famous Colchagua Valley. Serret Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
Serret Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Just half an hour from Chateauneuf but on the other side of the mighty Rhone river, and high in the hinterland of the Ardeche, lies Valvigneres - the lost valley of the vines. This is rugged, wild country - the deep gorges were once a haven for the French Resistance and thwarted all but the most intrepid merchants. Now, thanks to the value its wines offer, a number of top Burgundy houses have invested in the area. The 2003 vintage of this Cabernet when last pitted against its peers in the Bordeaux style category, came a staggering third out of 47. No wonder the villagers (all 89 of them!) are so proud of their wine traditions. Blackcurrant and forest fruits flavours edged with a hint of savoury green pepper. A medium-bodied, long lasting mouthful that's especially recommended with hearty stews.

Domaine la Begude 2004
Domaine la Begude 2004 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Excellent value Vins de Pays ... Domaine la Begude is a small family property in Gigondas, one of the Crus of the southern Rhone and an excellent alternative to pricier Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Here they use classic southern French grapes including Cinsault, Carignan and spicy Syrah from vineyards bordering 300-year-old, award-winning Chateau de la Begude to make a deliciously rich, concentrated red. Powerful, but medium bodied, with well integrated tannins.

El Bombero 2005
El Bombero 2005 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Ninth vintage of our Poll-topping red - No.1 for a record fourth time ... and 2005 is considered a great year in Spain, with very ripe fruit but good structured tannins. It's the ancient Garnacha vines of remote Cari?ena, the brilliance of winemaker Javier Domecque and yields lower than Grand Cru Burgundy that produce the wealth of deep, velvety rich fruit flavour fans adore. Chateauneuf or Barossa Shiraz sometimes match 'El Bomb' for power - but never at this price. And boy does it give flavour for the money, layer upon mouthwatering layer! Deep purple colour, ripe raspberry and blackcurrant aromas with mouthfilling rich fruit kept deliciously smooth and full bodied by the whack of 15% alcohol. Serve in large glasses with hot, juicy roasts - or butcher's sausages.

Legenda Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2005
Legenda Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2005 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
In the 19th Century the limestone slopes of Cahul were renowned for their glorious reds - served at Russia's Imperial Court between glasses of Roederer Cristal Champagne and Chateau d'Yquem. With help from all of you, Moldova's 'lost' vineyards of the tsars are enjoying a revival. Your reward is special access to this glorious new vintage of Legenda's rich, mellow Cabernet Merlot classic blend. This vibrant, mouthfilling wine is similar in style to good claret ... with deeper colour, riper cassis fruit and more all round 'oomph'!

The traditional grape of Beaujolais, Gamay produces wonderful soft, fruity red wines - perfect for Summer. In the virtually hidden paradise of the Ardeche, just half an hour from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the result is charmingly soft and fruity.

Alto Pina Alicante Castel?o Syrah Oak Aged 2005
Alto Pina Alicante Castel?o Syrah Oak Aged 2005 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
This is a ripe juicy blend of native Portuguese varieties Alicante and Castelao with a dash of Syrah for extra richness and depth of flavour. Oak-ageing just adds those sweet spice notes of cinnamon and sandalwood. Alto Piona is made at the Adega de Pegoes cellar where much vaunted winemaker JP Ramos consults, and the vineyard is surrounded by a border of cork trees ...so wine and cork comes from the same piece of land. ''Deep claret in colour with juicy forest fruit aromas, and rich, jammy flavours with elegant floral notes reminiscent of fine Northern Rhone reds''

Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Fans of Spain's rich reds take note - this sumptuous red is an absolute steal for the price! Crafted by winemaking whizz kid, Ana Becoechea from small bunches of old-vine Garnacha grapes grown high in the hills of Almonacid de la Sierra. Multi award-winning Terrai cellar is the 3rd largest bodega in the region, and counts US wine-guru Robert Parker among its fans! He frequently reviews their wines and always awards them the enviably high scores usually reserved for top-flight claret and Rioja. Luxuriously full and laden with rich, berry-ripe fruit flavour. Hints of kirsch and toasty oak on a velvety-smooth palate. Extremely food-friendly - try with sausages and mash or beef stew.

Geminus Par Ginestet
Geminus Par Ginestet - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Geminus is a bold, pioneering red with impeccable credentials - and simply exquisite quality. It has the weight and structure of seriously good claret, with an extra, up-front, fruit-rich intensity. It's made by Ginestet, owners of a long list of revered Bordeaux cru classe chateaux, such as Gruaud-Larose and Haut-Bages Liberal. Since 1897, the Ginestet family name has stood for supreme quality claret. It has also come to represent a forward-looking, dynamic winemaking approach as well. Here they unite top-drawer Merlot from the premium Fronsac region of Bordeaux, with rich, ripe Cabernet Sauvignon from prime sites in southern Languedoc (where more sun equals more ripeness!). Apply a little oak, the experience of winemaker Philippe Hebrard, and you've a ground breaking, impressive wine. Deep ruby colour with intense fresh black and red fruit aromas. Very juicy - plum and blackcurrant - starting softly and smoothly but becoming rounder and more expansive on the palate. Its excellent fruit structure, attractive edge of oak and very satisfying length makes it a perfect dinner party red.

Speargrass Shiraz 2005
Speargrass Shiraz 2005 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Classically warming, full, spicy red from Down Under - this is Aussie Shiraz at its distinctive best. Made at the awesome Buronga Hill winery near Mildura on the River Murray, it's a perfect example of why Aussie Shiraz is such a popular style. Given that senior winemaker Kim Hart has worked at Alkoomi in Western Australia and worked a vintage at Chateau Palmer in Margaux, it's no surprise that quality is so consistently excellent ... and what's more, the wine is much better value than many more famous Australian brands. Deep red crimson in colour, spicy, jammy fruit aromas. Smooth and juicy ripe plum flavour and a fresh, brambly finish. In a blind tasting the 2002 vintage of this wine beat a host of famous, illustrious names including Masi Amarone (#18), Cote-Rotie (#20), Chateauneuf-du-Pape (#13)!

Rich, spicy and warm-hearted ... this reflects beautifully the ripe berry fruit from flavours typical of the warm 2006 vintage. Three cheers for the excellent Rossetto family and three cheers for James Busby, who arrived at Circular Quay, Sydney, with the first Shiraz vines - now Australia's classic red - in the 1830s. Heady black fruit aromas with notes of cedar wood, juicy, peppery blackcurrant plus a spicy vanilla finish ... delicious proof that big, ripe wines are New South Wales's strongest suit.
