Groenendal Vineyards Chenin Blanc 2007
Groenendal Vineyards Chenin Blanc 2007 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Chenin Blanc has been grown in the Cape since the first settlers arrived from the Loire Valley in the 1660s. It's found something of a home from home, giving supremely elegant, complex and long-lived wines - ''a vinous national treasure'' the Wine Spectator calls it. The Bolvei cellar in Wellington are celebrating their centenary year in 2007 - so it's clear they know a thing or two about producing wine in South Africa. Their stunning Chenin was made from grapes grown on the dramatic slopes of the Groenenberg mountain, during the outstanding 2007 vintage. Imagine biting into a crisp green apple ... then enjoying an explosion of ripe peach, citrus and guava. Delightfully mouthwatering on the finish, it's fantastic on its own or enjoyed with fresh grilled fish.

Domaine Liboreau Sauvignon Blanc 2007
Domaine Liboreau Sauvignon Blanc 2007 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Thanks to an exceptional vintage, with a long, cool ripening period, the grapes for the 2007 Liboureau Sauvignon Blanc were incredibly concentrated. This means you get even more lively, herbaceous gooseberry and mineral fruit flavours for your money! Gooseberry, lime and fresh-cut grass aromas followed by citrus flavours and tangy freshness - you couldn't wish for a crisper, more invigorating Sauvignon. Enjoy as an aperitif or alongside seafood.

Berton Weigh Station Chenin Blanc 2007
Berton Weigh Station Chenin Blanc 2007 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Bursting with grapefruit, peach and lime-fresh flavours, this whistle-clean white was one of the first releases from Bob Berton's boutique winery. Bob's responsible for some of our favourite wines (think Willy Willy!) and now that he's invested in a cellar all of his own, he has total freedom to experiment with new grapes and techniques. Take blossom-scented Chenin Blanc, for instance. Best known in France's Loire Valley, it's capable of producing wines with a captivating and refreshing vibrancy. In Australia's warm climate, this grape stays crisp, fruity and fresh - especially during sensational quality vintages like 2007! Bright yellow in colour with aromas of lime, passionfruit and apple tart. Generous nectarine and kiwi flavours. Delicious on its own, or enjoyed with creamy fish dishes or simply cold meats.

Domaine Liboreau Chardonnay 2007
Domaine Liboreau Chardonnay 2007 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
A quiet tip-off back in 1996 alerted us to this small domaine, inland from the stylish medieval port of La Rochelle and whose whites are kept beautifully fresh thanks to the nearby Atlantic. The new release is as flavour-packed as ever, showing superb levels of intensity and purity ... this is a wonderful, everyday alternative to pricy Chablis! Bright green gold with crisp aromas of freshly-sliced apple and citrus leading to rich fruit flavours with a well-balanced, creamy finish. Delicious with fish.

Lake Diamond Sauvignon Semillon 2007
Lake Diamond Sauvignon Semillon 2007 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
An enticing blend of aromatic Sauvignon and lemon-fresh Semillon, Lake Diamond is every bit as dazzling as its name suggests! Iconic winemaker, Rodolfo Sadler crafted this gem from small parcels of juice-filled grapes grown on Argentina's premium mountain-top vineyards. The winery is based in the Mendoza province of Laguna del Diamante (Lake Diamond) - so-called because a Volcano's reflection in the lake produces a perfect diamond shape. When Rodolfo first tasted this white, he thought it was as spectacular as the view from his window - so he named it Lake Diamond! Astonishingly fresh with breathtaking layers of pristine, mouthwatering fruit - a wonderful aperitif or great partner to grilled fish.

Wiseman's Crossing Oak Aged Chardonnay 2007
Wiseman's Crossing Oak Aged Chardonnay 2007 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
''The Chardonnays from Down Under can rival all but the very best white Burgundies.'' Tim Atkin Fabulously rich thanks to a brief spell in oak, this ripe and rounded Chardonnay is bursting with zingy exotic fruit and lime-fresh flavours. Made exclusively for us in Australia's vine paradise, Riverina - you're going to love this! Wiseman's Crossing Chardonnay takes its name from legendary explorer Soloman Wiseman. An ex-convict, Wiseman was transported from England to Australia in the 19th Century, where he revolutionised local shipping routes, changing the face of Riverina forever. Endless hours of sunshine and fresh mountain snowmelt make Riverina a prime spot for grape growing. Glacier-fresh with zippy citrus and lots of pineapple fruit balanced by a twist of vanilla. Serve chilled with roast chicken, meaty white fish dishes and pork.

I Fratelli Garganega 2007
I Fratelli Garganega 2007 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Our buyer's brief was cool, crisp Pinot Grigio-like whites - so he headed straight to old friends Maurizio and Martino Biscardo in Soave. We've known the Biscardo brothers for years and our buyer knew they'd have something extra special up their sleeve. And they did! Made from 100% finest Garganega (the principal grape of Soave), this spectacularly fresh white is bursting with bright, citrus-charged character. Garganega is used in the region's finest #20-a-bottle whites, so this is quite a bargain! Exceptionally crisp with bags of light and zippy lemon and grapefruit character. It was the exceptional fruit purity that brought this white to our buyer's attention over ten years ago, and it's been top of everyone's wish lists since! Chile's reputation for wines has been rapidly growing - according to Wine Magazine they are 'the definition of drinkability' and that's certainly true here. Situated in the Maipo Valley, just below the Andes, the historic Tarapaca estate (founded in 1874) is not only breathtakingly beautiful but benefits from ideal conditions. Cool breezes and abundant sunshine infuses the grapes with aromatic freshness and a full, ripe flavour. Star winemaker Cristian Molina rigorously selects the very best fruit, and bottles it pure and unoaked to let the glorious tropical fruit flavours shine through.

Long Terrace Semillon Chardonnay 2005
Long Terrace Semillon Chardonnay 2005 - £6.55
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Welcome back Long Terrace! It's been four years since we've been wowed by a new vintage of this old favourite ... fitting then that the long-awaited return is crafted by a winemaking genius in a remarkable year for Australian wines. ''2005'' has turned out brilliantly'' wrote fine wine critic Robert parker of this vintage Down Under. A relatively cool Summer yielded superb fruit, especially for Oz star whites, Semillon and Chardonnay. Give a master like Sam Trimboli premium grapes, step back and hold out your glass! He has created a wonderfully aromatic wine, with all the exotic fruit of past vintages but far more elegance. White peach and citrus blossom aromas, a spicy, citrus finish. An extremely refreshing and satisfying mouthful!

The perfect temperatures allow the fruit and mineral flavours to develop fully, yet retain all the crisp freshness. Superb with grilled or poached fish dishes.

Las Casas de Vaqueria Sauvignon Blanc 2006
Las Casas de Vaqueria Sauvignon Blanc 2006 - £6.55
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
The pristine citrus aromas of Vaqueria's Sauvginon are a real reminder of top drops from Loire. High in the hills of Chile's Maule Valley, the pure sunshine and cool nights give this wine superb purity and freshness - preserved along with its crisp citrus aromas thanks to the screwcap closure. Winemaker Alvaro Arriagada, one of the rising stars of Chile, is often seen in the vineyards sporting his cowboy hat and is as skilled with the lasso as he is with his vines! In addition to producing fantastically enjoyable wines, Alvaro and his enthusiastic team really 'know how to throw a good party'. Clean and fresh with lively, citrus aromas and mouthwatering grassy, tropical fruit flavours. Great as an aperitif.

Pignoletto
Pignoletto - £6.55

This tongue-tingling fizz was once reserved for exclusive ristorantes in Bologna, but our buyers convinced winemaker Lorenzo Bertot to part with a few cases of his uplifting fizz ... and customers love it! A chilled glass of Pignoletto is deliciouly uplifting and makes an ideal aperitif ... but why not add a bit of sparkle to picnics or enjoy with classic dishes from Bologna like tortellini in brodo? ''Refreshingly off-dry, with seductive apple and white flower aromas, and a soft, gently sparkling mouthful of luscious peaches and pears. Delightfully different.''

The estate's charismatic winemaker is the straight-talking Ausssie Richard Osbourne, who has one simple aim ... to make wine that expresses pure fruit character. You've been snapping up each successive vintage of this South African gem for years, such is the power of its mouthwatering freshness and the purity of its fruit. Well, the new release is as fresh as ever. It's made by former South African Winemaker of the Year De Wet Lategan (something of a Chenin specialist) at the Bergsig Estate - a regular feature on the wine list in first class on South African Airways. Billowing pineapple, gauva and melon aromas with zippy citrus zing, White River is long and refreshing - full of orchard fruit flavours and zippy citrus notes. The perfect aperitif, or try it with salmon roulades and seafood canapes.

The Amasimi Kelder Byekorf Hoek Semillon 2007
The Amasimi Kelder Byekorf Hoek Semillon 2007 - £6.55
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Along with Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon is one of the noble varieties behind the great whites of Bordeaux - sweet and dry. Rarely is it seen there on its own (you're far more likely to find dry 100% Sauvignons). That said, one or two of the top Sauternes are made almost exclusively from Semillon. No, dry Semillon is very much a New World phenomenon - you may already be familiar with the Aussie versions. We reckon this one from a group of top Cape winemakers is every bit as good - suggesting this is a style we'll be seeing more of in future. What this space ... Freshly grated lemon zest aromas lead to a full, creamy palate of citrus flavours. Lovely balanced acidity and good length. Serve with pan-fried fish, grilled lemon chicken or a Thai-style stir-fry.
