Croix de Cabaret 2006
Croix de Cabaret 2006 - £5.99
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Southern French rarities like this are something of a house speciality. We've been scouring the Languedoc in earnest since the 1970s - long before it became fashionable. The important things to know about this wine are that it comes from the beautiful, rugged vineyards of the Minervois, it's deliciously oak-aged and is made from a very rare grape called Caladoc. Caladoc is a cross between Malbec (or Cot as it's known locally) and Grenache. As it's not an officially recognised variety, it can't be included in the Minervois AOC wines. Hence La Croix de Cabaret is a Vin de Pays - and exceptionally good value! Made by Thierry Tesseyre and Jean-Claude Founeau, both of whom have wide winemaking experience abroad, this dark, intense red is sure to hit the spot! Reflecting the excellent 2006 vintage conditions, La Croix is made in a modern style to accentuate the ripe fruit flavours. Brimming with the scents of dark red berries, fresh pepper and wild herbs. Smooth, succulent and intense.

Les Sept Fontaines de Saint Dominique 2004
Les Sept Fontaines de Saint Dominique 2004 - £5.99
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
This mature, full-bodied red was crafted from the fruit of 25-year-old vines, grown in the vineyard's deep and stony soils. Made from entirely Grenache - the noble grape of Chateauneuf - this sublime red is completely unoaked to let the fruit-driven freshness shine through. Winemaker Michel Archer has been working in the ancient, picturesque village of Besse for decades - and really understands how to produce wines which express the local terroir, combined with intense fruit flavours. Deep red colour with intense, ripe berry fruit aromas. Packed with concentrated ripe fruit flavours, this delightful red would be an excellent partner to roast beef.

Tor di Monte Grechetto 2007
Tor di Monte Grechetto 2007 - £5.99
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
One of Italy's great originals, cultivated since Roman times, Grechetto is a key component of the best known Umbrian white, Orvieto, and displays a wonderfully concentrated, refreshing elegance. Our specialist Italian Buyer was greatly impressed by this particular wine from the 11th century Tordimonte estate because it offers the same full-flavoured, fresh and nutty character of Orvieto minus the hefty price this famous name carries. Light golden colour, with subtle toasted almond, zesty lemon and floral aromas. Fresh, dry and ripe, it's perfectly suited to local specialities such as Prosciutto di Norcia (a quality cured ham) or freshwater fish and garden-fresh salads.

Domaine de Targuerie 2006
Domaine de Targuerie 2006 - £5.99
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Wine has been produced in Gascony since the fifth century. Even then, viticulturists could recognise the superior terroir of the region - abundant sunshine and cool temperate evenings produce premium ripe and juicy fruit bursting with freshness! This area is world famous for its Armagnac, but Gascony is rapidly developing a reputation for producing exquisite white wines that are comparable in quality to those of the Loire Valley! This elegant white is bursting with fresh-fruit appeal. Packed with juicy melon, apple and citrus-fresh flavours, it's no surprise that it was recently given a top recommendation at London's prestigious International Wine Challenge. Try with grilled fish or as a lively aperitif.

El Loro Bonarda 2007
El Loro Bonarda 2007 - £5.99
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
El Loro (the parrot) will totally charm you! Chief winemaker Rodolfo Griguol insists that it's one of the juiciest reds he's ever made - and we couldn't agree more. Tipped to be the next top red wine sensation, Bondara is a dark, spicy original from Argentina. In the Andean foothills of the Mendoza region, high altitude and warm, sunny days allow these richly-coloured grapes to ripen fully. Bright ruby in colour with aromas of jammy fruit, cherries and smoky spice. Firmly structured with ripe blackberry fruit flavours with a hint of coffee. Perfect with barbequed steak or tomato and basil pasta.

Les Tours de la Citadelle 2005
Les Tours de la Citadelle 2005 - £5.99
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Magnificently herby original from the outskirts of the magnificent medieval walled city of Carcassonne. Made from 100% Grenache, this juicy gem is packed with flavour - thanks to a sun-soaked 2005 vintage. 2005 was a fantastic across France, and red wines in the Languedoc region achieved seriously concentrated, ripe fruit flavours - as this gem will attest to! Deliciously rich, with abundant blackberry, chocolate and red fruit flavours - this voluptuous red is the perfect partner to bangers and mash. Enjoy!

Grand Lescure 2006
Grand Lescure 2006 - £5.99
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Handcrafted by expert winemaker Jean-Pierre Chanteraud to commemorate the winery's 60th anniversary, this luscious red is a rare gem! It's made from Negrette - an aromatic local variety that's for years been championed by Jean-Pierre for it's spicy, succulent fruit flavour. There's also a splash of Cabernet Franc and juicy Syrah in the blend for extra body and complexity. Deep ruby in colour with abundant black cherry, cranberry and mulberry flavours. Delicious as a glass on its own or with barbequed meats.

Finca Sorella Chenin Blanc Trebbiano 2007

Baron de Turis 1920 Seleccion 2007
Baron de Turis 1920 Seleccion 2007 - £5.99
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
We're very excited about Valencia. Known as Madrid on Sea (the port is a popular weekend hotspot), it's also home to one of the best value whites we've tasted. Gold-medal winemaker Juan Pico Lozano picks local Malvasia and Moscatel for his superbly refreshing Baron de Turis. Hugely popular in the seafront bars and bursting with ripe citrus fruit, this is the perfect lunchtime white! Teeming with bright peach and golden mandarin flavours with a minerally fresh edge - try a chilled glass with crayfish pasta or light Caesar salad.

Posada del Rey
Posada del Rey - £5.99
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Posada del Rey is Rioja how the locals like it - fresh, juicy and unoaked. Strict winemaking laws restricting harvest yields in Spain's No.1 red wine region mean any surplus grapes must be 'declassified' and labelled table wine. The good news is that you enjoy Rioja in the bottle - just not on the label ... hence the fabulously low price! ''Vibrant ruby red with deep flavours of juicy redcurrant, plum and black cherry and a silky smooth finish. Superb with lamb and tapas - a delight too on its own.''

Vallon des Gravettes 2006
Vallon des Gravettes 2006 - £6.15
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Tired of the same old round of Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc? Pep up your palate with lovely, racy, multi-layered wine from one of the most exciting best value wine regions in France. The high valley of the Ardeche lies an hour's drive uphill from the Rhone and until recently, never much visited 'cept by folk that were lost (hence it provided ideal cover for the Marquisard - the French Resistance - in WW2). These days though, by virtue of its ideal climate for vine growing, it has become a haven for dynamic winemakers seeking freedom from the restrictive AOC system. Even famous name growers form the Rhone and Burgundy are diversifying their interests and investing heavily here. Vallon is a refreshingly different blend of premium varieties. 75% is the apricot and white pepper-scented Grenache Blanc. The balance, a judicious combination of Viognier, Marsanne and Sauvignon Blanc. Its cleverly crafted by Christelle Delamalmaison and her talented sidekick for the 2006 vintage, Greek-born Aussie Zane Zatzikis. A delightful mouthful of flavours - freshly grapy, honeyed and peachy - undercut by lemony freshness. A youthful, modern wine that's very tasty to drink on its own, yet an ideal partner for seared scallops, grilled seabass with braised fennel, light salads or roast chicken.

Anta da Serra 2005
Anta da Serra 2005 - £6.15
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
This super-rich red is the latest star from cult producer Redondo, based in Portugal's illustrious Alentejo region. The wines of Alentejo are renowned for their high quality and still offer incredible value for money! Top wineries across the globe are frantically buying property in the area - including Baron Rothschild-Lafite! Winemaker Pedro Hipolitou blended traditional local varieties with just a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon for extra richness. Intense ruby colour with vibrant redcurrant and vanilla aromas. Powerful and concentrated with hints of damson and blackberry with a peppery edge. Great with roasts, game pie or vegetable moussaka.

La Cittadella Pinot Grigio 2007
La Cittadella Pinot Grigio 2007 - £6.15
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Cittadella hails from historic Transylvania which enjoys the same cool climate as northern Italy ... you get premium quality without the hefty price tag! The grapes are hand-picked from premium high-altitude vines in Romania's historic Transylvanian wine country, where the vine has been cultivated for centuries. In fact, ancient philosopher Plato famously declared the vineyards to be the world's finest! Elegant blossom aromas with crisp citrus flavours and the irresistibly moreish intensity of top Pinot Grigio. Lovely on its own or with seafood and white meats.

Brightlands Chenin Blanc 2005
Brightlands Chenin Blanc 2005 - £6.15
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Chenin Blanc is the classic white grape of France's Loire Valley - famous for honeyed wines with bracing acidity, like Vouvray. But in Australia it excels in making simple, soft, crisp and fruity wines like Brightlands Chenin Blanc. This deliciously refreshing, light white - from Southern Australia - is perfect if you don't fancy Down Under's big, bold buttery Chardonnays, and are not in the mood for Sauvignon's full-on, tongue-tingling zing! Pale straw in colour, with aromas of lemon, kiwi fruit - herbal and honey characters too. Soft and full palate, with lighter citrus notes, melon and a good length. Generous weight.

Domaine Le Hitton Reserve 2005
Domaine Le Hitton Reserve 2005 - £6.15
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Domaine Le Hitton nestles in the heart of rural Gascony. Here the Job family was one of the first to produce crisp, dry whites in the area. Thanks to the estate's gentle slopes, the vines stay nice and thirsty helping to create zippy, concentrated flavour. From its location off the beaten track, this white blends the regions' leading varieties to create a superb aperitif. Colombard, the traditional grape of the region, produces delicious, fresh green-apple flavour - whilst Sauvignon brings a grassier crispness and Ugni Blanc adds a little depth. Vibrant gooseberry and lemongrass aromas with a hint of grapefruit. Elegant with grassy, green apple character, and intense citrusy freshness. Irresistible on its own, it's a top choice for parties too. Serve chilled with vegetable quiche, creamy pasta or light hors d'oeuvres.

Domaine de Fortunet Colombard Sauvignon 2005
Domaine de Fortunet Colombard Sauvignon 2005 - £6.15
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
This beautiful property has belonged to the Debets family for over 5 generations and is located in Lanne - Soubiran(a little village of 89 people) in the heart of Gascony. With its oceanic climate and just the right mix of sunshine, rain and coolness, the area provides ideal conditions for the production of top-quality wines. The wine was named Fortunet (which means ''fortune'') to describe the success that the estate has enjoyed over the years ... ''luck smiled'' on the property! The grapes for this white were harvested during the night to retain all the deliciously fresh and zesty fruit character. The result is crisp, fresh and minerally with delicious floral and grapefruit notes. Serve chilled as an aperitif or with creamy chicken or seafood dishes.
