Grande Pavone 2006
Grande Pavone 2006 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
From Puglia, Grande Pavone marries southern Italy's ancient, hero grapes - Negroamaro and Primitivo included - to power-packed, spicy perfection. Winemaker Giuseppe Caragnolo has revived some very old traditions to create a style that's been enjoyed here for centuries (some of his wines are even made by the time-honoured technique of foot treading)! Quality starts in the vineyard with low-yielding old bush vines - the grapes all picked by hand and fermented in old-fashioned, open-top fermenters. The reward is a red of great depth and colour, with robust black fruit, warming raisiny notes and a long, spicy finish. Rich, smooth and absolutely perfect alongside anything savoury and Italian.

Croix Sainte Colombe 2005
Croix Sainte Colombe 2005 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
The fantastic wines of Fitou are seriously rich and wild thanks to some of the oldest vines in France. Fans include the UK's top wine writer, Hugh Johnson, who praises their ''superior quality and power''. Yet while Fitou is a classic of southern France (and more exclusive than nearby Corbieres), wineries are losing out to international mass brands - in spite of making far superior wines! Award-winning winemaker Michel Marty is ''determined to win genuine wine lovers back'' and oak-matured Croix Sainte Colombe is just the wine to do it. Remarkably rich with deeply spiced raspberry and blackberry, kept deliciously smooth by a gentle touch of oak. Great with casseroles, roasts and - of course - barbecues.

The Grand Gaillard name has, for many years, stood for reliability and wonderful value for money. For vintage after vintage fans have made a beeline for this elegant Merlot. Beautifully deep red in colour with aromas of damsons and redcurrants. There is the fleshy richness and succulence that claret lovers adore thanks to ripe bramble and soft plum flavours. Perfect with barbecued steak.

Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
'Petit' by name but not by nature! The rare Petit Verdot grape causes excitement wherever it goes - in-the-know drinkers prize it for giving a big, mouthfilling red that can outdo Shiraz for rich, peppery, bramble flavours. And the fabulous Ink Series - the perfect name for something so lipstaining - does not disappoint. Discovered on a visit to Australia's Salena Estate - an award-winning, family-run winery - the wine is made by acknowledged masters of Petit Verdot. So called because of its small berries, the grape is used by top Bordeaux chateaux to add spice and complexity to their Grand Vins, but thrives on its own Down Under thanks to the long, sunny conditions. Inky dark with intense aromas of smoky cassis and blackberry and a mouthfilling richness of spicy black fruits and soft vanilla oak. Terrific partner for a Sunday roast.

Velvety smooth Italian red with a glittering medal-winning pedigree. In addition, it has long been highly acclaimed by the world's top wine writers - and loved by the best judges of all ... you! Publications such as Decanter, Wine Spectator and Italy's Gambero Rosso have all praised it to the heavens in recent times. There is simply no better example of the luscious Montepulciano grape in all of the Abruzzi. Vibrant purple with satin-textured bramble and black cherry flavours. Collezione di Paolo Sangiovese Toscanna 2006
Collezione di Paolo Sangiovese Toscanna 2006 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
At its best, Sangiovese can be the most exciting, herby, spicy grape in Italy - and, as the UK's pre-eminent wine writer Hugh Johnson notes in his World Atlas of Wine, Tuscany's more ambitious producers do their very best to coax the maximum colour and flavour from it. Paolo Masi, at his stunning Tuscan estate in the heart of Chianti's premium Rufina district, is an acknowledged master. He calls this pure Sangiovese his 'mini Chianti' and it oozes the same Italian style and character ... and the stunning 2006 vintage has added even more richness and character to the wine! Ruby red colour, creamy morello and berry aromas ... beautifully ripe summer fruit flavours. Delicious with a big plate of antipasti or pasta.

Les Rouquets Merlot 2006
Les Rouquets Merlot 2006 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
There are many reasons why this superb value red is such an exciting find and so incredibly delicious! For any fan of St-Emilion, Pomerol, or southern French gems, it's a must. It comes from the eastern reaches of the Pyrenees on the lower slopes of the Canigou mountains - an area boasting some of the best terroir in the south of France. 'Rouquet' is the Catalan word for rounded stone - just like the famous galets of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the rocky vineyards here are strewn with them. Great for the vine which must dig deep to extract nutrients. The winemakers are two of the south's most talented. Pierrick Harang is a top graduate of the Montpellier wine school and with experience at California's Mumm winery. Jean-Michel Barcelo is a highly reputed consultant advising 15 up-and-coming estates. Deep garnet red with liquorice, black pepper and summer fruit character. Really expressive and with just a hint of spicy oak. Smooth and rounded. Best with a rich cassoulet or herby oven-roasted vegetables.

Tramonti Montepulciano 2005
Tramonti Montepulciano 2005 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Situated on Italy's central Adriatic coast, Abruzzo is famed for its deeply-coloured wines made from the Montepulciano grape. Much of it ends up being blended into bulk wines, but a vibrant spirit of innovation prevails among the smaller producers. Scipione Giuliane at Tramonti - 'between the mountains' - is one such producer! Seizing the opportunity he decided to 'go it alone' and bottle his wine under his own estate label to allow the character of the grapes - grown on rugged, sun-soaked hills - to shine through. And the very pleasant result is a rich, concentrated wine bursting with ripe cherry and plum. No oak here, so you get the full flavours of the fruit. Great with anti-pasti or roasted pork and sage.

Zapapico Malbec Oak-Aged Reserva 2006
Zapapico Malbec Oak-Aged Reserva 2006 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
''Argentinian Malbec is the best in the world'' (The Independent) ... and dark, intense Zapapico is surely the proof! This perfect, rich expression of the grape comes from the extraordinary Famatina valley - a two-hour flight from just about anywhere! The valley was traditionally well known for its Gaucho's - cowboys who acted as soldiers and sheriffs - and Montonero's whose horseback deliveries were once the only contact between the Famatina Valley and the relative civilisation of Buenos Aires. The area is now famous for its high altitude vineyards, warm days, cool nights and incredibly low rainfall - that all help to produce fantastically concentrated wines. ''Deep, complex wine with aromas and flavours of plums, raspberries and gooseberries, plus rich vanilla, chocolate and tobacco characters thanks to the oak. Enjoy with a juicy, chargrilled steak ''

Ermite de la Chapelle 2006 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Sandwiched between Minervois to the north and the Cotes du Roussillon to the south, the Corbieres region is described by Jancis Robinson MW as ''the most important appellation in the Languedoc region ... producing some excitingly dense, herby red wines''. This red is from a single estate in the village of Talairan where the residents have been making wine for three centuries. It takes its name from the nearby Chapel of Notre Dame de l'Aire, which dates back to the 13th century, and became a retreat for members of religious orders. Rich and spicy, with ripe red and black berry flavours and hints of wild hers. Delicious with roast lamb or char-grilled vegetables.''

Farnese Sangiovese 2006
Farnese Sangiovese 2006 - £6.29

This wonderful red is made from Sangiovese, the noble grape of Chianti, by Barolo-trained winemaker Filippo Baccalaro on the 'not-so-pricey' Adriatic coast. ''Full of enticing morello cherry, plum and violet aromas and a silky mouthful with layers of lip-staining bramble and cherry fruit. Goes down a treat with red meats, pizza and fresh tomato pasta.''
