At last the Chenin grape is getting the credit it deserves - thanks to South Africa's innovative Cape winemakers who cosset low-yielding, old vines to make impressive dry whites like this! Bergsig estate, owned by the Lategan family, is situated in the Worcester region on the other side of the mountains from Paarl and Stellenbosch. Enjoying its own 'microclimate' the region is drier and warmer than elsewhere- allowing the grapes to achieve maximum ripeness and richness. ''Made from 100% Chenin Blanc (known as Steen in The Cape) and unoaked, it has subtle aromas of lemon and lime, is crisp and rounded, with just a delicate hint of refreshing grapefruit on the finish.''

Dassen View Chenin Blanc 2007
Dassen View Chenin Blanc 2007 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Loire Valley variety Chenin Blanc has become a true speciality in South Africa, where it gives fantastically refreshing, zingy whites wines with a tropical fruit edge. Dassen View is made by Jacques Erasmus, a winemaker who, even by South African standards, is an expert in the grape - he made his first Chenin Blanc at the tender age of 12 using his parents' fridge! The grapes for his world-class wine come from a coastal vineyard in the Worcester region of the Cape, which benefit from cooling breezes that extend the growing period and help the berries achieve full ripeness, whilst still retaining the crisp, tangy fruit flavours. Seriously refreshing stuff! ''Pale lemon-gold in colour with aromas of lemon and crisp orchard fruit flavours. With its lively, green-apple character, this wine makes a refreshing glass any time. Enjoy as an aperitif or serve with prawn salad, grilled white fish with chilli salsa or a vegetable stir-fry.''

However innovative winemakers like Bob have transformed it into a delicious, fresh-tasting dry white ... great for lovers of Sauvignon! Bob's a very old friend of ours - he introduced you to ever-popular Willy Willy Shiraz and we're delighted he chose to give you exclusive access to his supremely refreshing Verdelho ... especially as these grapes were the very first to be crushed in this exciting new winery! Here the combination of high altitude, long sunshine hours and low rainfall makes for a perfect grape growing climate. Highly experienced winemaker Rodolfo Griguol has worked in this region for many years, and during that time has built up a network of contacts with the best growers. He takes only top quality grapes from them to make Zamba - a deliciously mouthwatering, grapefruit and passionfruit flavoured white wine, named after a distinctive Argentinian music and dance. A tongue-tingling array of grapefruit, lime and passionfruit flavours make this the perfect partner for sea bass of a plate of chargrilled prawns. It's thanks to Chile that Alsace's most exotic grape variety is regaining the limelight - even though it's so scarce it only accounts for 0.2% of Chile's plantings. Exceptionally aromatic and crisp, this textbook Gewurz is made along very organic lines as Aresti's vineyards are blessed with Eden-like conditions. The old-vine fruit is harvested at night and fermented at low temperature to keep all its enticing character. Spicy, crisp and fragrant with aromas of lychees, limes and rose blossom. Refreshing and captivating flavours of ripe apricot, lychee, citrus and a hint of spice. A fantastic aperitif - delicious with Thai, Asian and Japanese cuisine too.

Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
2007 gave some of the smallest grape harvests Italy has seen in 60 years ... but it's excellent news! The grapes were even more concentrated than usual, allowing winemaker Maurizio Biscardo to craft a truly exceptional wine. Maurizio has over 170 years of winemaking in his family and although virtually retired he says he ''loves making wine for us''. When he and Tony Laithwaite met up last summer they immediately saw eye-to-eye and started discussing ways to make Colombella better than ever before. Together they decided to add a touch of Garganega to the Pinot Grigio. The great grape of wines from Soave, Garganega gives added elegance and finesse. Tony and Maurizio are delighted with the result - and are sure you will be too! ''Delightful aromas of orange blossom, classic tongue-tingling citrus and apple flavours, and remarkable purity. A lovely aperitivo!''

Groenendal Vineyards Chenin Blanc 2007
Groenendal Vineyards Chenin Blanc 2007 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Chenin Blanc has been grown in the Cape since the first settlers arrived from the Loire Valley in the 1660s. It's found something of a home from home, giving supremely elegant, complex and long-lived wines - ''a vinous national treasure'' the Wine Spectator calls it. The Bolvei cellar in Wellington are celebrating their centenary year in 2007 - so it's clear they know a thing or two about producing wine in South Africa. Their stunning Chenin was made from grapes grown on the dramatic slopes of the Groenenberg mountain, during the outstanding 2007 vintage. Imagine biting into a crisp green apple ... then enjoying an explosion of ripe peach, citrus and guava. Delightfully mouthwatering on the finish, it's fantastic on its own or enjoyed with fresh grilled fish.
