The winemaker is the dynamic Giulano d'Ignazzi who has worked in Chile and injects his whites with an almost New World-like freshness whilst still retaining Italian character. Working with both New and Old World flying winemakers Moncaro has become one of the most important cellars in the region - and with two wineries: one exclusively for red wine production, the other specialising in white.

Light golden colour, with subtle toasted almond, zesty lemon and floral aromas. Fresh, dry and ripe, it's perfectly suited to local specialities such as Prosciutto di Norcia (a quality cured ham) or freshwater fish and garden-fresh salads.

Vallon des Gravettes 2006
Vallon des Gravettes 2006 - £6.15
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Tired of the same old round of Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc? Pep up your palate with lovely, racy, multi-layered wine from one of the most exciting best value wine regions in France. The high valley of the Ardeche lies an hour's drive uphill from the Rhone and until recently, never much visited 'cept by folk that were lost (hence it provided ideal cover for the Marquisard - the French Resistance - in WW2). These days though, by virtue of its ideal climate for vine growing, it has become a haven for dynamic winemakers seeking freedom from the restrictive AOC system. Even famous name growers form the Rhone and Burgundy are diversifying their interests and investing heavily here. Vallon is a refreshingly different blend of premium varieties. 75% is the apricot and white pepper-scented Grenache Blanc. The balance, a judicious combination of Viognier, Marsanne and Sauvignon Blanc. Its cleverly crafted by Christelle Delamalmaison and her talented sidekick for the 2006 vintage, Greek-born Aussie Zane Zatzikis. A delightful mouthful of flavours - freshly grapy, honeyed and peachy - undercut by lemony freshness. A youthful, modern wine that's very tasty to drink on its own, yet an ideal partner for seared scallops, grilled seabass with braised fennel, light salads or roast chicken.

Named after two early 19th Century explorers (Sturt was the first explorer to venture along the Murray River), the Sturt & Hume range is a small selection of wines put together by the excellent ''Buronga Hill boys'' each year. Winemaker Matt Fawcett - who worked at Brown Bros for many years - created this crisp and refreshing Chenin Blanc with a splash of Colombard for added zest. In style it's a thoroughly modern Australian wine - unoaked and with beautifully defined fruit. At just 12% alcohol, it is deliberately more elegant than the big heavy Australian Chardonnays that have flooded the market in recent years.
