With ultra-expensive neighbours including Chateaux Lagrange and Gruaud Larose, Chateau Labat is a real insider's tip. Chateau Doisy-Vedrines (half bottle) 2006
Chateau Doisy-Vedrines (half bottle) 2006 - £12.59

''Spice, honey, lemon and lime ... long and balanced. Bodegas Primicia Reserva 2004
Bodegas Primicia Reserva 2004 - £12.69
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Housed in a beautiful 14th century building in the village of Laguardia, Primicia is run by the three Madrid brothers - Rodolfo, Roberto and Juan Ramon, and was recently named among Rioja's Top 20 houses in Decanter magazine by John Radford, the UK's leading Rioja authority. Altitude is important here too, with their highest vineyards lying at over 700 ft above sea level. Limited release of this ultra-stylish Reserva - previous vintages have been described as ''almost Pomerol style'' by Decanter Magazine and have developed something of a cult following. Long fermentation and restrained use of new oak creates a complex, structured wine with uncharted depths. Despite tiny volumes and huge international demand, the Madrid brothers have allocated 50 exclusive cases.

Jaffelin 2005
Jaffelin 2005 - £12.69
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Writer Anthony Hanson writes in his book 'Burgundy' that Rully is ''a very beautiful wine - one of the best value white Burgundies available' ... and we couldn't agreee more! This one, from the textbook 2005 vintage and star producer Jaffelin, is one of the very finest. Made using prized 70-year-old Chardonnay vines that lie next to the Premier Cru of Meix, and with the miserly yields of a Grand Cru, it gives terrific intensity of flavour. ''Lovely honeyed apricot and white flower aromas. Then piercingly pure flavours of crisp apple, with a classic mineral freshness and satisfying richness from eleven months in finest French oak. Very classy indeed. To 2011.''

Chateau L'Etoile de Viaud 2005
Chateau L'Etoile de Viaud 2005 - £12.99
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
The vineyards of Chateau L'Etoile de Viaud lie close to Pomerol (home to some of the world's most expensive reds - Petrus, Le Pin etc) and enjoy a similar superb terroir. Very low yields of Merlot are grown here by the Chevalier family, whose fine estate wins regular plaudits in La Revue du Vin de France, and their claret boasts a sumptuous palate of layered, velvety damson. It confirms Robert Parker's opinion that the best Lalandes rival good Pomerol. Pure, deep and concentrated with copious black fruit flavours, chocolaty notes and a gorgeous, chewy texture. Like most 2005s it will drink beautifully on release but will continue to develop.
