Bilbul Road Reserve Chardonnay
Bilbul Road Reserve Chardonnay - £33.34
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Delicious, Spring-fresh Chardonnay named after Riverina pioneer William Bull who settled there in the 1890s and dug a 134 foot well which saved the region's population and livestock during extensive droughts at the end of the century. The De Bortoli name has been prominent in Australian wine since the company was established in 1928. The founder's grandson Dean De Bortoli made an international name for himself - and the Riverina wine region - by creating the now legendary Noble One Botrytis Semillon in the 1980s. De Bortoli was named 'Wine Company of the Year' by Winestate (Australia's Decanter magazine equivalent) in 2005, 2006 and again in 2007. Made by senior winemaker John Coughlan from grapes picked in the cool of the night to preserve freshness. Pale gold with bags of peach and nectarine fruit. Rich, ripe, fresh melon flavours follow. Serve chilled with chicken or pork.

Chateau l'Ancienne Tuilerie
Chateau l'Ancienne Tuilerie - £34.14
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
We stumbled upon this cellar in the early 90s whilst looking for red wines. What we discovered was a cache of great white wines that had been quietly winning medals of a number of years. Winemaker Michel Mouret admits, with some pride, that he works 7 days a week - his family home is attached to the winery and we're sure that at night if he put an ear to the wall he could hear the tanks fermenting. This fresh, zesty Sauvignon is very food-friendly - delicious served with goat's cheese salad, asparagus or grilled fish.

''Fresh and mouthwatering with enticing aromas and crisp citrus flavours. Delicious with shrimps, salmon or - for the more adventurous - chicken with ginger''

This is thanks in no small part to the country's rapidly improving winemaking expertise and massive investment in its wineries. Increasingly, Argentina is the place to look for ''good value wines with unique flavours'' (Drinks Business). Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, the vineyards for Ramirez de Velazco Torrontes lie in the La Rioja region, which enjoys warm days and cool, dry nights ... with plenty of melt water available for irrigation, the conditions are near ideal for the vines and shows through in the intense, pure fruit flavours. Bon Courage Chardonnay
Bon Courage Chardonnay - £34.90
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Both Hugh Johnson and Robert Joseph believe one region besides The Cape stands out for both established quality and best value - Robertson. And Bon Courage is now firmly at the forefront of the region's top wineries ... and very popular with you. The beautiful Bon Courage homestead is run by Jacques Bruwer with the help of his father Andre, who at the age of 65 still jumps onto the tractor to get out into the vines on an almost daily basis. When we last visited, Jacques' youngest son showed more interest in the wine and farm than going to school - so it looks as though the future of the family-run winery remains safe! Bright gold in colour with vibrant aromas of freshly sliced apples and pears. Refreshingly citrus but with plenty of ripeness and fruit concentration. Enjoy!

Tor di Monte Grechetto
Tor di Monte Grechetto - £35.94
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
One of Italy's great originals, cultivated since Roman times, Grechetto is a key component of the best known Umbrian white, Orvieto, and displays a wonderfully concentrated, refreshing elegance. Our specialist Italian Buyer was greatly impressed by this particular wine from the 11th century Tordimonte estate because it offers the same full-flavoured, fresh and nutty character of Orvieto minus the hefty price this famous name carries. Light golden colour, with subtle toasted almond, zesty lemon and floral aromas. Fresh, dry and ripe, it's perfectly suited to local specialities such as Prosciutto di Norcia (a quality cured ham) or freshwater fish and garden-fresh salads.
