The Black Stump Durif Shiraz Magnum 2007
The Black Stump Durif Shiraz Magnum 2007 - £15.69
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Australia's most addictive velvety red returns ... and the new 2007 vintage is guaranteed to delight more than ever! That's because the drought affected the berry size, resulting in small berries of intense flavour which pushed concentration to levels we never thought possible. This is a wine with 'wow'! The Black Stump is handcrafted by John Casella, who practises his 'dark art' behind closed doors at his family's remote estate. The wine owes its name to an Aussie expression meaning 'the back of beyond', but its remote origins has not stopped it from winning medals at prestigious competitions around the world. Its secret is dark, captivatingly smooth Durif, a rare grape (''that takes no prisoners'' The Observer), used as a 'turbocharge' to add inky-black fruit to other reds. Here, it's partnered perfectly with another big Aussie red grape, spicy Shiraz. Deep purple hue. Black, brambly Durif given a spicy, blueberry edge by dark chocolate Shiraz and sweet oak. Velvety, voluptuous, and irresistible served in large glasses with char-grilled steak or Sunday roasts.

Gran Calero 2006
Gran Calero 2006 - £15.69
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
When our buyers, Thomas Woolrych and James Snoxell returned from a trip to Spain's remote Yecla region they could not contain their enthusiasm for a giant 15% red they'd tasted ''HUGE levels of concentrated black fruit but so luxuriously smooth ... and what a bargain!'' Gnarled old Monastrell vines flourish under Yecla's baking hot sun, and the Calero family, who have owned their cellar here since the 1900s, are known as ''Kings of Monastrell''. Now, with multi-accoladed Ana Isabel Rubio as chief winemaker, the quality of the wines they are producing is staggering! In fact, Robert Parker has awarded wine she has made from these same grapes 90 points! ''Gloriously dark and rich - an effortlessly silky mouthful of concentrated, complex black fruit flavour. At its best when opened an hour before drinking and enjoyed with roasted red meat, steaks or strong cheese.''

Wine has been made in Rioja since at least the second century BC and it remains Spain's greatest fine wine region - producing superb value for money and great quality in equal measure. And Rioja Reservas in particular have a style entirely their own. Subtle, smooth, velvety and fresh, they radiate comfort and warmth like a roasted chestnut. And this is what you get with each glass of Finca Valpiedra - a fine taste of ancient Spain. ''Firm tannins balance a plump texture in this traditional red. Plum, coffee and spice flavours are light but focused. Calls you back for another sip.'' (Wine Spectator) We can't argue there!
