Groenendal Vineyards Chenin Blanc 2006
Groenendal Vineyards Chenin Blanc 2006 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Chenin Blanc has been grown in the Cape since the first settlers arrive from the Loire Valley in the 1660s. Despite the recent switch to more ubiquitous international varieties (Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc), Chenin remains the definitive Cape white. Always distinctive, in the right hands it is capable of elegance, complexity and longevity. Groenendal was among the first 15 farms established in the Wellington area 300 years ago. Chenin has been grown there for the last century. The current owner Herman Le Roux's great grand father emigrated from Blois in the Loire which is the centre of Chenin Blanc cultivation in France. Today the estate's wines are vinified by Franck Meaker at Wellington's Bolvei Cellars. Pale gold with light green tinges. Ripe peach, citrus and guava aromas. This is a really well balanced wine with a whack of fresh fruit flavours, lovely harmonious structure and a crisp lingering finish. Especially recommended with grilled fish and seafood kebabs.

Grand Gaillard Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2006
Grand Gaillard Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2006 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
''Bergerac dry whites are crisper and fruitier than Bordeaux'' (Decanter). Proved beyond doubt with winemaker Lionel Condeau's take on this classic white Bordeaux blend. 2006 was a stupendous vintage for whites as you'll soon realise when you taste this vibrant, citrussy delight. Grand Gaillard has been a customer favourite for years, but with dynamic new winemaker Lionel Condeau at the helm quality is up another notch. His enthusiasm and commitment to quality over quantity deserves mention - like green harvesting, which removes all but the healthiest fruit weeks before harvesting ... leaving the vines to focus on fewer grapes. Quantity down, quality up! Plump, rounded, lemony Semillon made all the racier by lime-scented Sauvignon. All the elegance and finesse you'd normally find only in more expensive chateau wines from neighbouring Bordeaux. Sublime partner for goat's cheese and all kinds of seafood.

Berton Maria's Block Semillon 2006
Berton Maria's Block Semillon 2006 - £6.29
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
When Australia becomes a republic, it should toast its new president with a glass of Australia's icon white, Semillon. So says writer Max Allen and many other critics would agree. For Semillon you see, more so than Chardonnay, Shiraz or Riesling is a wine that Australia 'does' like no one else. The most classic examples come from the Hunter Valley, cost a small fortune and can last decades. Out in the Riverina, in inimitable fashion, they make excellent examples of Semillon at far more down to earth prices. We love this one from Bob Berton's new winery. The fruit comes from his partner, Frank Sergi's vineyard - a small parcel named after Frank's mother Maria. Zippy fresh, un-oaked Semillon with lemon grass and sweet citrus notes. Full, creamy, yet elegant and balanced. Serve with lemon chicken, roast pork and apple sauce, or a veal and olive casserole.

Kleinbok Colombard 2007
Kleinbok Colombard 2007 - £6.29

Colombard is very much a South African success story - no one does it better and the quality just seems to be getting better year on year. This beauty comes from the small family-owned property next door to our old friends at the Bergsig Estate. The owner, WH Lategan has just turned 102 and he reckons a glass of wine a day has helped him get there! A dash of Semillon adds weight to this pristine Colombard. Nettley, pineapple nose with fresh guava and tropical fruit palate. Lovely aperitif best enjoyed young and fruity.

Chenin Blanc is to South Africa what Sauvignon Blanc is to New Zealand and Chardonnay to Australia - it's the white they do best ... and this is deliciously fresh drinking from a young winemaker who's just won a coveted Champion Chenin Trophy too. The small vineyard at Wildekoof is situated at high altitude in a wild ravine of the Lngeberg mountains - where the cool climate is ideal for Chenin, allowing it to retain acidity that is essential for that thrilling refreshment. Lively citrus fruit aromas leap from the glass. Waves of zingy lemon and green apple freshness lead to a terrifically pure finish. Fantastic as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to grilled salmon steak, fresh Summer salads.
