Domaine Mercadier Chardonnay
Domaine Mercadier Chardonnay - £4.99
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Master winemaker Philippe Mercadier has a display cabinet full of awards, including a Gold medal from London's biggest wine show. His family own several famous chateaux in Bordeaux including, for many decades now, Domaine Mercadier in the northern part of the Corbieres region. Here Philippe is renowned for luxurious, buttery Chardonnay. However, to protect local varieties officials have outlawed 100% Chardonnays. Philippe is so obsessive about the quality of his high altitude grapes that he's made one anyway - with magnificent results. He accepts having to label his wine as a humble Vin de Pays, and in this tough economic climate, he's happy to keep the price right down. Deliciously rounded with clean citrus and green apple flavours. Lively and fresh on the finish - it's a stunning partner to rich, creamy chicken dishes.

Pavillon de Lobre 2005 2005
Pavillon de Lobre 2005 2005 - £5.15
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Medal-winning Pavillon de Lobre sits between zippy Sauvignon and rich Chardonnay in style, so is highly recommended for entertaining. It's from the pretty village where painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born and was handcrafted from a characterful local grape, Loin de L'Oeil, meaning ''far from the eye'' or bud. A crisp, lively wine with exuberant citrus aromas and ripe lime, green apples and gooseberry flavours. Crisp yet weighty, it's ideal as an aperitif or as accompaniment to fish dishes.

Vega Oliveras Macabeo 2006
Vega Oliveras Macabeo 2006 - £5.15
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
This lively, dry white comes from Spain's exciting La Mancha region. Just south of Madrid this region is fast becoming the area of the moment for many of the top Rioja houses. Made from Macabeo, a variety often used in super-rare white Rioja, Vega Oliveras is brimming with stone fruit and mineral flavours. Superb with seafood tapas.

Villa Fiori Bianco
Villa Fiori Bianco - £5.39
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
A smooth clean and ripe white taking the best of two worlds - the indigenous Greganico grape from the warm climate of Sicily balanced with the Chardonnay from the cooler hillsides of the Abruzzan coast - Vino de Tavola in name only! Taking 85% Greganico from Sicily and 15% Chardonnay from the Abruzzo region (both areas had good vintages), young winemaker Scipione Giuliani was keen to make a blend he liked - subject to our approval - and not be constrained by appellation laws, hence the vino di Tavola tag. Excellent with fish in lemony sauces (or just to perk up the cold turkey platter), Villa Fiori's pale lemon colour exudes a simple slightly grassy nose and has a fresh, clean palate, hinting of ripe, floral peach. Very good as a lunchtime aperitif too. ''Everyone is talking about how fantastic today's best Sicilian wines are - and not without reason'' (Decanter). They're packed with flavour, character and are slightly wild, particularly when made with local grape varieties like Grecanico and Catarratto.

Brezza Bianca
Brezza Bianca - £5.49
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Each year in northern Italy's Fruili region - regardless of how great the vintage is - only a fixed amount of wine can be labeled Grave del Friuli DOC. Never ones to let great things go to waste, we asked our favourite Pinot Grigio cellar to rescue their finest 'declassified' fruit and make you a truly mouthwatering white. And 2006 was a spectacular vintage in Italy - so this year's offering is better than ever! ''Fresh and mouthwatering with enticing aromas and crisp citrus flavours. Delicious with shrimps, salmon or - for the more adventurous - chicken with ginger''

Cavazzola
Cavazzola - £5.49
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Deliciously crisp and elegant cool-climate white from the same cellar as our priciest, top-flight Pinot Grigio. Do not be fooled by Cavazzola's humble Vino da Tavola status - it's made from 100% Grave del Friuli DOC grapes ... only 'declassified'! Winemaking rules only permit a certain of bottles to be granted DOC status each year - a problem for wineries in bumper years, but a real chance for a bargain for canny buyers. And here's a perfect example from our top Pinot Grigio cellar. Cavazzola has a tantalising, fragrant nose of orange blossom and pineapple, followed by mouthwateringly fresh crisp citrus flavours and a tingly mineral finish.

Poggio di Ettore
Poggio di Ettore - £5.49
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Passionate, small-estate winemaking doesn't come any better than this. Made by medal-winning, third-generation winemaker Ettore Galasso, on his picturesque Abruzzo estate, from a small parcel of old-vine Trebbiano. Trebbiano is the classic white of the Abruzzi region and Ettore has brought out all its refreshing characteristics that make it such a great match with creamy Italian pasta dishes. Pale gold with fresh aromas and white nectarine and citrus fruits. Lively and cleansing, but with real intensity.

Castell de Veza 2006
Castell de Veza 2006 - £5.49
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
The multi-medal winning La Baronia de Turis cellar is renowned for the quality of its Malvasia and Moscatel grapes - indeed in 1626 it was even ordered to pay a special tax to King Felipe IV of Spain due to the superior quality of their wines! Now young, up-and-coming winemaker Juan Pico Lozano has brought these two varieties together beautifully to create this refreshing, zippy white. Delicious.

Villa Fiori Bianco
Villa Fiori Bianco - £5.49
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
A smooth, clean and ripe white made during the fantastic 2006 vintage, using the indigenous Italian variety Cataratto, as well as Graciano and Chardonnay grapes, sourced mainly from Sicily - a region that is fast developing a sound reputation for producing some of Italy's most flavoursome wines. Dynamic young winemaker Scipione Giuliani was keen to make a blend he liked - subject to our approval - and not be constrained by appellation laws, hence the Vino di Tavola tag. Don't be fooled, though, it's anything but Vino di Tavola in taste! ''Packed with racy citrus and delicate blossom flavours, developing on the palate to include ripe peach. Fresh and uplifting, it's an excellent lunchtime aperitif wine, as well as making a great partner to fresh fish platters.''

Monte Viejo Macabeo 2006
Monte Viejo Macabeo 2006 - £5.49
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Officially classed as ''very good'', La Mancha's 2006 vintage gives this ripe Macabeo tons of intense apricot flavour. Complex and well-balanced, it's a fantastic value alternative to pricier white Rioja. The Macabeo variety is not very widespread in Castilla although its popularity is increasing. It is said to owe its name to the Maccabee tribe mentioned in the Bible and seems to have originated in the Ebro basin near Rioja. During harvest the Macabeo grapes were picked very early in the morning and taken to the pressing station immediately to preserve freshness. There they are pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks at low temperature guaranteeing the fresh, aromatic nose you encounter the moment you draw the cork. Crisp, with slight floral hints and abundant tropical fruit aromas, Monte Viejo Macabeo is a perfect easy drinking white. Ideal as an aperitif, or with seafood salads and white fish.

Light and refreshing Riesling Italico - an ancient grape - is combined with crisp, thirst-quenching Sauvignon, grown in pre-Roman vineyards. Wine has been made in this part of the Danube since the 4th century. Production flourished after the conquering Romans established the city of Drobeta - a great trading centre and now home to Domaine Danubiane. La Renardiere Chardonnay 2003
La Renardiere Chardonnay 2003 - £5.69
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
This lightly oaked Chardonnay is named after one of the parcels of vines that makes up the blend, ''La Renardiere''. The land in turn, takes its name from the many foxes that live wild in the area. The wine is made by the Vignerons de la Noelle, whose cellar is in Ancenis, half way between Nantes and Angers. The cellar was founded in 1952 and the wine is made by Franck David, who studied locally and has worked in both Muscadet and Sancerre - he is very much a white wine specialist. The cellar is very well equipped with the latest technology which enables them to bring out the extremely expressive aromas of fruit and white flowers.
