Tabali Reserve Chardonnay 2004 - £9.99
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
''For excitement head to Limari'' says the Sunday Times. To the north of Santiago, between the Pacific coast and the Atacama Desert, it's a remote region carving an international reputation for its ''really exciting wines'' (Jancis Robinson MW) - in particular ''world-class Chardonnay'' (The FT). And Tabali is leading the way. This small family winery may be on the edge of the desert but proximity to the sea means a cool climate - and remarkably elegant wines. And Tabali Reserve Chardonnay 2004 is no exception ... it was the only Chardonnay from Chile to win Gold at the 2005 International Wine Challenge, out-tasting some super-expensive whites from Burgundy and beyond. If you enjoy sophisticated Chardonnay, you'll love this! ''Fresh, intense and complex on the nose - tantalising mineral notes backed by hints of honey and citrus. Deliciously rich and ripe thanks to three years bottle age, with a creamy, toasty finish after nearly a year in oak. Treat as you would a fine white Burgundy ... perfect with seafood and white meats.''

'Pop' Scarpantoni came out to Australia from Italy after the war and settled in the McLaren Vale. He worked for Thomas Hardy and Sons and then as a vineyard manager at Seaview introducing innovative, water-saving 'contour' vineyards in the 1960s. Today his sons Fil and Michael carry on the great family tradition of doing things their way and winning hundreds of medals in the process. Fresh nose and crisp stone fruit flavours. En Beauvoir Bourgogne AOC 2006
En Beauvoir Bourgogne AOC 2006 - £10.39
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Affordable great white Burgundy is no longer a mythical beast! Our wonderful Chai on the quayside of Castillon in Bordeaux allows us to source fantastic parcels of wine, age them to perfection and then release them to you at realistic prices. We asked Bernard Derain - our best man in Burgundy - to source us a parcel of super-premium Chardonnay. And what a vintage to open with! 2006 has been rated even better for white Burgundy than 2005 (a year of new superlatives)! Bernard settled on the En Beauvoir vineyard whose low-yielding vines average 40 years of age ... then carefully barrel-fermented the hand-picked grapes in his cellar before the wine reached Le Chai where it's still maturing in the finest French oak. One top writer (he'll remain anonymous to save his blushes) rated it the finest Meursault he'd tasted all year ... very satisfying! ''Aromas of creamy citrus and buttery apricot. Enticingly creamy and elegant - unmistakably fine Burgundy. Enjoy to 2010.''
