Scarpantoni Unwooded Chardonnay
Scarpantoni Unwooded Chardonnay - £10.39
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Gone are the days of heavily oaked Aussie Chardonnays. Wood-free, fruit-laden delights like this are now the preferred style. The Scarpantoni brothers do it so very well. Not surprising really for a, estate that won the country's most soughty-after award - 2007 Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy. 'Pop' Scarpantoni came out to Australia from Italy after the war and settled in the McLaren Vale. He worked for Thomas Hardy and Sons and then as a vineyard manager at Seaview introducing innovative, water-saving 'contour' vineyards in the 1960s. Today his sons Fil and Michael carry on the great family tradition of doing things their way and winning hundreds of medals in the process. Fresh nose and crisp stone fruit flavours. Lovely balance - very classic, modern Aussie style.

But you'd better be quick! 2007 produced exceptionally tiny yields of top-quality fruit so there's not much to go around. Brimming with wonderfully intense cut grass, gooseberry and passion fruit flavours - you don't want to miss out!

Boasting Burgundy's top honour - a Tastevinage - awarded to only the finest 2% of the vintage, their secret is a small plot of vines a stone's throw from the Grand Cru vineyards of legendary Les Clos. Brightwater Sauvignon Blanc 2007
Brightwater Sauvignon Blanc 2007 - £10.79
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
''Don't bother searching for Cloudy Bay and save money with this terrific wine'' The Independent Brightwater Sauvignon 2007 is from New Zealand's Nelson region ... a short ride over the mountains from Marlborough. Small production and so strict allocation - especially for this highly regarded vintage, which was awarded 5* by Cuisine magazine and also 5* by respected NZ wine writer Michael Cooper - but we managed to secure some precious cases. Each vintage causes an avalanche of press acclaim. Since it burst onto the scene in 1999 it's won Golds above some of New Zealand's biggest names, has been awarded marks in the mid 90s from the great and good of the wine world and been singled out as one of the best Kiwi Sauvignons to drink with food. This year was no exception and the winery is going from strength to strength. Wonderfully intense aromas - fresh-cut grass, gooseberry, lemon - and rich, long-lasting flavours of zesty tropical fruits. Crisp, pure and lively, it makes an excellent aperitif but is fine enough to partner grilled fish (like turbot), lemon chicken or Thai food.

Reserve Champalou 2005
Reserve Champalou 2005 - £10.89
Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.
Husband and wife team Didier and Catherine Champalou met at oenology (winemaking) college in 1976. Both from winemaking families, they established their own winemaking enterprise in 1984 with a focus on quality and innovation. As 'The Wine and Food Guide to the Loire' says of them - ''...applying rigorous standards they have created one of the most exciting wineries in Vouvray''. The noble Chenin Blanc is the grape here and the delimited zone of 'Vouvray AOC', is where it reaches its apotheosis. In its nobility is great versatility. It can appear in all guises - from the intensely honeyed and ageworthy, to off-dry, through to bone dry. This Reserve' is ever-so-slightly off-dry. Subtle honeydew melon aromas, guava and melon flavours, well-poised with balanced citrus lime 'backbone'. Delicious to sip now but will gather further complexity over the next couple of years. Perfect with delicate shellfish flavours or subtle charcuterie.

Domaine Paul Corneau Cyllene 2006

Paul and Marie-Luce Corneau's single vineyard white is benchmark Pouilly-Fume and with today's discount, it's also fantastic value. Jancis Robinson MW called 2005 ''a seriously exciting Pouilly-Fume vintage'' ... Joanna Simon of The Sunday Times says ''the 2006's have the edge''. Classic Loire minerality, crisp gooseberry and elderflower are joined by hints of orange zest. Fine and elegant, it makes a classic match to asparagus, goats cheese and delicate seafood dishes.
