Le Batteleur
Le Batteleur - £69.99
Price on from Laithwaites.
Bordeaux reds were once called 'clairet', meaning light-coloured. So merchants of old found ways of beefing it up - wine books even give you the 'Bordeaux Recipe' of times gone by, using dark black Spanish wine Tarragona - illegal but tasty! Le Batteleur shows you that beefy black Tarragona and fruit-fragrant Bordeaux marry together perfectly when done by a master winemaker, like out Jean-Marc Sauboua. It's named after the battle fought where our Chai now stands, where loyal Bordeaux was lost by the English king. It's a great house red - dark ruby in colour, ripe berry/bramble fruit. Full, warm and rich - like claret with a touch of smooth, sunny Spain. A real pleasure to drink.

Roche Gaillan Medoc Magnum AOC 2000
Roche Gaillan Medoc Magnum AOC 2000 - £22.49
Price on from Laithwaites.
It's rare to see 2000 claret at best, let alone in magnum format! It was a vintage of historic significance and fabulous quality - a dream end to the century for the winemakers of Bordeaux. Seven years on and of the few bottles still left unopened, most are gathering dust in the cellars of millionaire wine lovers and collectors around the world. That's why we were so delighted to have discovered this small parcel of rare, top quality 2000 vintage Medoc in even rarer magnums. ''It is impossible to think of any vintage since 1990 that has produced so many delicious wines'' Jancis Robinson MW ''In 2000 there were fabulous Merlots and profound Cabernets ... in short it is a phenomenal year'' Robert Parker Roche Gaillan 2000 skilfully combines 70% Cabernet with 30% Merlot from Bordeaux's 'left bank' - home to such prestigious estates as Chateau Lafite-Rothschild and Chateau Latour. The large format bottle (1.5 litres) has ensured the wine's graceful evolution to its current state of perfect maturity. Brick red with an amber rim. Evolved and complex aromas of blackcurrants, damson plums, liquorice root and mocha. Medium-bodied with fully ripe black fruit and supple tannins. Serve with roast red meats, feathered game or fine English cheeses.

Chateau Morillon
Chateau Morillon - £69.99
Price on from Laithwaites.
Englishman David Smith can give the Bordelais a run for their money with his wonderfully smooth red Bordeaux! He's one of a handful of non-Frenchmen to have qualified as a 'jeune agriculteur viticole', and has been involved in making wine since 1995 ... together with a little help from a Bordeaux-trained winemaker, Jean Louis Vinolo. Apart from making delicious wines, David puts his agricultural training to good use, growing kiwi trees, pomegranates, flowering laurels and olive trees in the Chateau grounds. Perhaps a bit odd in a part of France so famed for its vines, but the very fact that these plants can survive shows just how blessed the estate is - its unique microclimate means that frost hardly ever makes an appearance ... and shows why David's vines produce such concentrated, juicy fruits! ''Fantastically ripe and smooth, with plenty of dark berry fruit, damson and spice. Just the thing to enjoy with a traditional English roast!''
