V.R
V.R - £9.29
Price on from Laithwaites.
This fabulous Viognier (code name VR) is one of the first releases from our beautiful old 'Chai' that lies on the quayside at Castillon, Bordeaux.'Le Chai au Quai (pronounced 'Shay OK'), allows us to cherry pick the finest parcels of wine and age them to add complexity ... and still be able to offer them to you at remarkably low prices! Our winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua took the finest parcels of Viognier from southern France's superlative 2005 vintage and slowly fermented them to fully capture the famous honeyed apricot flavour that fans love so much. He then aged the wine in fine French oak, just like they do for #20-a-bottle Condrieu. Fresh stone fruit and honey aromas, with a hint of blossom. Rich and full with a touch of cinnamon spice and vanilla from the oak ageing. A lovely partner to creamy fish or seafood dishes.

Il Principe Pinot Grigio 2006
Il Principe Pinot Grigio 2006 - £7.79
Price on from Laithwaites.
The wine that made Pinot Grigio a favourite! Il Principe has been a bestseller for nearly a decade thanks to its impressive depth and palate-cleansing freshness ... and here's another belting release from white wine master Giorgio Flessati. Back in 1999 whilst winding our way through the mountains en route to Venice (a rather terrifying drive) we stopped in Volano for a taste in the cellars of award-winning winemaker - Flessati. We parted good friends with an arrangment to take as much of his fantastic white as he would let us have! Crisp aromas of apricot and citrus spring from the glass. A mouthwateringly fresh, almost Sancerre-like 'zing'. Enjoy it now at its fresh, tongue-tingling peak. Perfect as an aperitif and has the weight to partner creamy chicken or fish dishes.

Altos del Conde 2006
Altos del Conde 2006 - £6.15
Price on from Laithwaites.
Located near the remote town of Horta St. Joan where Picasso used to paint, the mountains of the up-and-coming Terra Alta region in northern Spain are blessed with plenty of sunlight, warm days and cool nights. This excellent climate means that the white Macabeo (known as Viura in Rioja) and Chardonnay grapes give deliciously intense, fresh fruit flavours. These perfectly ripe grapes are then transformed by the expertise of multi award-winning winemaker Josep Guerrero into zesty, refreshing white wines like Altos del Conde. ''Packed full of zingy citrus fruit flavours, with a generous dash of tropical melon and peach from the Chardonnay. A delicious aperitif, this wine will also partner light chicken and fish dishes admirably.''

Groenendal Vineyards Chenin Blanc 2006
Groenendal Vineyards Chenin Blanc 2006 - £6.29
Price on from Laithwaites.
Chenin Blanc has been grown in the Cape since the first settlers arrive from the Loire Valley in the 1660s. Despite the recent switch to more ubiquitous international varieties (Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc), Chenin remains the definitive Cape white. Always distinctive, in the right hands it is capable of elegance, complexity and longevity. Groenendal was among the first 15 farms established in the Wellington area 300 years ago. Chenin has been grown there for the last century. The current owner Herman Le Roux's great grand father emigrated from Blois in the Loire which is the centre of Chenin Blanc cultivation in France. Today the estate's wines are vinified by Franck Meaker at Wellington's Bolvei Cellars. Pale gold with light green tinges. Ripe peach, citrus and guava aromas. This is a really well balanced wine with a whack of fresh fruit flavours, lovely harmonious structure and a crisp lingering finish. Especially recommended with grilled fish and seafood kebabs.

Marquise
Marquise - £5.99
Price on from Laithwaites.
Praised by President Hugh Johnson as having ''more dimensions than the usual Sauvignon'', this is an absolute must-have for lovers of crisp whites. With immense enthusiasm, Noel Bougrier searches the Loire - source of some of the world's most refreshing wines - to secure parcels of extremely fresh, premium grapes. The result: ''Fruity, harmonious white with pure aromas of freshly sliced apple, followed by invigorating, juicy pear flavours. Ideal as an aperitif or served with fish pie.''

Gran Valle de Niebla Sauvignon Blanc 2006
Gran Valle de Niebla Sauvignon Blanc 2006 - £8.99
Price on from Laithwaites.
Here's a white of fabulous intensity and distinction from the remarkably talented Adolfo Hurtado, whose dedication to innovation and quality has earnt him worldwide acclaim as one of the finest winemakers in Chile. As a result, his top cuvees can command upward of #15 a bottle! But not for old friends ... we've worked with Adolfo for years, and he's happy to give you first taste of his piercingly fresh Sauvignon. It's made from the fruit of meticulously selected vineyard plots in the Great Valley of Fog (Gran Valle de Niebla) where foggy mornings allow grapes to ripen perfectly, whilst retaining the crisp citrus freshness - a hallmark of world-class Sauvignon. ''Long-lasting flavours of zesty lime and gooseberry. Crisp and pure, it makes an excellent aperitif and excels with grilled fish or salads.''

Villa Fiori Bianco
Villa Fiori Bianco - £5.49
Price on from Laithwaites.
A smooth, clean and ripe white made during the fantastic 2006 vintage, using the indigenous Italian variety Cataratto, as well as Graciano and Chardonnay grapes, sourced mainly from Sicily - a region that is fast developing a sound reputation for producing some of Italy's most flavoursome wines. Dynamic young winemaker Scipione Giuliani was keen to make a blend he liked - subject to our approval - and not be constrained by appellation laws, hence the Vino di Tavola tag. Don't be fooled, though, it's anything but Vino di Tavola in taste! ''Packed with racy citrus and delicate blossom flavours, developing on the palate to include ripe peach. Fresh and uplifting, it's an excellent lunchtime aperitif wine, as well as making a great partner to fresh fish platters.''

Estampilla Torrontes Sauvignon 2007
Estampilla Torrontes Sauvignon 2007 - £6.29
Price on from Laithwaites.
Torrontes, ''one of Argentina's most exciting grapes'' (The Times), is a discovery well worth making. In this mouthwateringly crisp white, made along very organic lines, its gentle spiciness is combined with racy Sauvignon giving a wonderfully fresh, vibrant result. In Famatina Valley's high-altitude vineyards, warm days and cool, dry nights give the ideal conditions for ripe, concentrated grapes - with refreshing, zesty charm. Whilst snowmelt from the hills provides the purest irrigation, ideal in the near desert-like conditions. ''Delicious, leap-from-the-glass aromas of grapefruit lead to juicy pineapple and orchard fruit flavours. A lively aperitif that also goes very well with salads and light fish dishes.''

Terre des Cailloux Sauvignon Blanc 2006
Terre des Cailloux Sauvignon Blanc 2006 - £7.39
Price on from Laithwaites.
Set in the heart of the Loire Valley, the Touraine region produces some of the purest, best value Sauvignon Blanc around. This delicious example comes from the Caves de la Tourangelle, home to the Bougrier family for 5 generations. Winemaking here is overseen by Frank Chatelain - an award-winning winemaker with a wealth of experience from Champagne and Cahors to California! ''Zesty aromas of lemon are accompanied by superbly delicate yet concentrated flavours. Perfect as an aperitif, and equally superb with grilled or fresh, marinated fish.''

Culley's Sauvignon Blanc 2006
Culley's Sauvignon Blanc 2006 - £9.59
Price on from Laithwaites.
Inspired winemaking from an historic gold-winning New Zealand winery and outstanding value - a gem like this usually costs #10 or more - make this a must-stock Sauvignon for any occasion. Our old pal Kiwi supremo Neill Culley (former chief winemaker for Babich) has taken fruit from classic Marlborough - bringing crisp, aromatic elegance - and Hawke's Bay, whose extra sunshine adds a delicious tropical note. Established for over 100 years, the tiny Pleasant Valley Winery has an excellent reputation. That's because the founder's grandson Stephen Yelas refuses to expand - putting quality before quantity. So while this is both a first class aperitif, as well as a superb match for fish, it's strictly in limited supply.

The Gooseberry Bush Colombard Sauvignon Blanc Riesling 2006
The Gooseberry Bush Colombard Sauvignon Blanc Riesling 2006 - £8.99
Price on from Laithwaites.
Do not miss this! ''One of Australia's most talented and innovative winemakers'' says Oz Clarke, ''Always excellent - 5 STARS'' adds James Halliday, of the estate and husband-and-wife team behind this zesty, aromatic and unique white gem. Once again, this incredible deal necessitated a vow of silence on our part as to the true identity of the estate - they couldn't risk such a low price undermining their upmarket status. The rare combination of three intensely flavoured varieties makes for such a delightfully refreshing, very moreish aperitif you'll want to it enjoy time and time again. Take all you can! Zingy lime and fresh melon aromas. Crisp, racy citrus, stone fruit and apple blossom - absolutely delicious on its own or with seafood, fish, salads and white meat dishes

The Amasimi Kelder Byekorf Hoek Semillon 2007
The Amasimi Kelder Byekorf Hoek Semillon 2007 - £6.55
Price on from Laithwaites.
Along with Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon is one of the noble varieties behind the great whites of Bordeaux - sweet and dry. Rarely is it seen there on its own (you're far more likely to find dry 100% Sauvignons). That said, one or two of the top Sauternes are made almost exclusively from Semillon. No, dry Semillon is very much a New World phenomenon - you may already be familiar with the Aussie versions. We reckon this one from a group of top Cape winemakers is every bit as good - suggesting this is a style we'll be seeing more of in future. What this space ... Freshly grated lemon zest aromas lead to a full, creamy palate of citrus flavours. Lovely balanced acidity and good length. Serve with pan-fried fish, grilled lemon chicken or a Thai-style stir-fry.

Estampilla Torrontes Sauvignon 2006
Estampilla Torrontes Sauvignon 2006 - £5.89
Price on from Laithwaites.
''Argentina is arguably blessed with the New World's most diverse line-up of grapes'' (Tim Atkin, The Observer). Made along very organic lines, this mouthwateringly crisp white marries gently spicy Torrontes (Argentina's speciality white) with racy Sauvignon. The area is doubly blessed thanks to a climate ideal for vines. Warm days and cool, dry nights in the high-altitude vineyards ensure a tremendously long ripening period. Snowmelt from the hills provides the purest irrigation in near desert-like conditions. Leap-from-the-glass aromas of wild flowers and orchard fruits leading to lingering grapefruit, pineapple and citrus flavours. A lively aperitif that also goes very well with green salads and light fish dishes.

Sowman Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2006
Sowman Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2006 - £10.39
Price on from Laithwaites.
Terry and Lynley Sowman's pristine estate, set in Marlborough's 'Golden Mile', used to supply finest quality Sauvignon grapes to the region's most demanding winemakers. When the Sowmans, renowned growers of top-quality Sauvignon, decided to bottle their own wine, they turned to veteran winemaker John Forrest for expertise. John - whose wines are rated above the revered Cloudy Bay - has crafted a thrillingly intense white. Herbaceous aromas with hints of tropical fruit. Explosive guava and gooseberry flavours are kept lively and fresh under screwcap. Ideal with asparagus dishes, delicate fish and summer salads.

Loosen Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett 2004
Loosen Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett 2004 - £12.39
Price on from Laithwaites.
When it comes to quality German Riesling like this, ''No other wine can offer in a single sip as much finesse, purity of fruit, intensity of flavour and thrilling acidity'' (New Sotheby's Wine Encyclopedia). And after years of being overlooked, it's now very much the 'in' style - especially over the Summer months. Happily, prices don't yet reflect the high quality, so the value is outstanding. Ernst Loosen has been both 'Decanter Man of the Year' and the 'White Winemaker of the Year' at the International Wine Challenge, so you'd be hard pressed to find a finer exponent of fabulous German Rieslings. This is a Kabinett - a step up from standard QbA wines with a little more intensity and finesse. It's mouthwatering aromas recall lemons, lime and passion fruit, while its fresh, fruitiness is balanced by irresistibly racy acidity. Serve lightly chilled as an aperitif, with pan fried scallops, grilled fish fillets or a light green pea risotto.
