Villa Fiori Bianco
Villa Fiori Bianco - £5.39
Price on from Laithwaites.
A smooth clean and ripe white taking the best of two worlds - the indigenous Greganico grape from the warm climate of Sicily balanced with the Chardonnay from the cooler hillsides of the Abruzzan coast - Vino de Tavola in name only! Taking 85% Greganico from Sicily and 15% Chardonnay from the Abruzzo region (both areas had good vintages), young winemaker Scipione Giuliani was keen to make a blend he liked - subject to our approval - and not be constrained by appellation laws, hence the vino di Tavola tag. Excellent with fish in lemony sauces (or just to perk up the cold turkey platter), Villa Fiori's pale lemon colour exudes a simple slightly grassy nose and has a fresh, clean palate, hinting of ripe, floral peach. Very good as a lunchtime aperitif too. ''Everyone is talking about how fantastic today's best Sicilian wines are - and not without reason'' (Decanter). They're packed with flavour, character and are slightly wild, particularly when made with local grape varieties like Grecanico and Catarratto.

Pavillon de Lobre 2005 2005
Pavillon de Lobre 2005 2005 - £5.15
Price on from Laithwaites.
Medal-winning Pavillon de Lobre sits between zippy Sauvignon and rich Chardonnay in style, so is highly recommended for entertaining. It's from the pretty village where painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born and was handcrafted from a characterful local grape, Loin de L'Oeil, meaning ''far from the eye'' or bud. A crisp, lively wine with exuberant citrus aromas and ripe lime, green apples and gooseberry flavours. Crisp yet weighty, it's ideal as an aperitif or as accompaniment to fish dishes.

Eden Valley Growers Riesling 2004
Eden Valley Growers Riesling 2004 - £12.99
Price on from Laithwaites.
''Perfectly fragrant Riesling, with all the aspects of the lofty Eden Valley district there in abundance: lime, citrus blossom and minerally notes'' (Adelaide Advertiser) A unique collaboration between a dedicated group of top Eden Valley's growers, this delicious Riesling is a perfect example of why the region produces Australia's most hallowed, blossom-scented whites. Zesty, fresh and very elegant, the wine has intense aromas of citrus, lime and guava. Enjoy as an aperitif or with your best fish and seafood dishes.

Trinite de Vendome AOC Coteaux du Vendomois 2004
Trinite de Vendome AOC Coteaux du Vendomois 2004 - £7.39
Price on from Laithwaites.
From a tiny enclave of the northern Loire (home to some of the world's finest dry Chenin Blancs) comes this exciting new discovery. ''2004 is a cracking vintage for Loire Chenin...they are so rich and full of character'' enthuses our buyer Abi Hirshfeld. Winemaker Michael Andri adds a dash of Chardonnay (traditional to the area) to enrich his wine with a luxuriously creamy texture and the moment Abi tasted the final blend blend, she knew the deliciously ripe flavours would be an instant hit. An aromatic nose of fresh apples and floral notes leads to a palate rich with tropical fruit flavours. Perfectly balanced by a zip of citrussy acidity. Enjoy chilled as a perfect aperitif, or serve with lightly grilled fish.

Le Sommet Viognier 2005
Le Sommet Viognier 2005 - £8.29
Price on from Laithwaites.
Spicy, full bodied French Viognier from the Ardeche region - an isolated area that is rarely visited outside the Summer months, when it becomes an adventure playground for tourists interested in water sports. Although little known, the Ardeche is home to some seriously good wines made using similar grape varieties as those found in the neighbouring Rhone Valley. Viognier is most famous in classic Rhone white Condrieu, which often sells for #15-#20 a bottle. Here, the Cave de Valvigneres - an award-winning cellar - have crafted a wine that mirrors the creamy, fresh apricot, honey and spice flavours of a top Condrieu ... yet for a much more appealing price! This is a rich, oak-aged white with a creamy texture, flavours of apricots, honey and hazelnuts, and notes of spicy vanilla. Enjoy with rich fish dishes, roast chicken or pheasant. 12.5% vol. Drink by the end of 2007.

L'Ecluse Chardonnay 2002
L'Ecluse Chardonnay 2002 - £6.99
Price on from Laithwaites.
Praised by the press for its flavour, awarded trophies for value and a Silver medal for quality by international judges ... this is a perfect, all-round Chardonnay that works as an aperitif, with an entree or with a rich fish dish. From Carcassonne in France's Midi, this beat four Grand Cru Chablis, four Meursault and top end New World at the International Wine Challenge. The aim was to create a wine that combined the sunshine ripe fruit of the New World with the classy backbone of French Chardonnay. And did they succeed! Almost honeyed on the nose with round, ripe and generous orange scented pear and apricot flavours. Lovely long palate and very well balanced, this is a big, classy Chardonnay that would make a great alternative to Burgundy. Drink to end 2006.

Chateau l'Ancienne Tuilerie 2004
Chateau l'Ancienne Tuilerie 2004 - £6.69
Price on from Laithwaites.
We stumbled upon this cellar in the early 90s whilst looking for red wines. What we discovered was a cache of great white wines that had been quietly winning medals of a number of years. Winemaker Michel Mouret admits, with some pride, that he works 7 days a week - his family home is attached to the winery and we're sure that at night if he put an ear to the wall he could hear the tanks fermenting. This fresh, zesty Sauvignon is very food-friendly - delicious served with goat's cheese salad, asparagus or grilled fish.

Pech de Calade Roussanne 2005
Pech de Calade Roussanne 2005 - £5.99
Price on from Laithwaites.
Though much used to add spice and vibrancy to white Chateauneuf, the Roussanne grape seldom has the chance to shine on its own. Now those in the know are discovering just how good it can be! Pech (meaning little hill) de Calade is made from various domaines near Beziers in France's Midi by Australian supremo Richard Osborne. Selecting only the best parcels when they have reached optimum ripeness, he has created a well-balanced, complex style of wine. A wonderfully rounded mouthful of intense mineral and citrus, this is a weighty, lush style that provides a satisfying glass on its own yet has tons of character to partner food. Chill gently and crack open the bottle with sauced white meats, salmon with a lemon sauce, fish pie or a simple risotto. The cellar recommends Cantal cheese and quiche too!

Les Carrielles 2005
Les Carrielles 2005 - £6.55
Price on from Laithwaites.
Delicious, age-worthy Chenin Blanc with a medal-winning pedigree, this fresh and lively white is a long-time favourite. Made by expert Loire winemaker Eric Laurent from vineyards around Saumur - a picturesque medieval town in the Loire Valley's wine h eartland - Les Carreilles spends a year in the cool, deep limestone cellars characteristic of the area. The perfect temperatures allow the fruit and mineral flavours to develop fully, yet retain all the crisp freshness. Superb with grilled or poached fish dishes.

Don Cayetano Chardonnay 2006
Don Cayetano Chardonnay 2006 - £6.69
Price on from Laithwaites.
With their fruit purity and naturally vibrant flavours, Chilean wines are hard to beat. This famous, family-run estate is well-known for its great quality. Luis Felipe Edwards and his son have planted vines high in the hills (up to 1000m!) where long, warm summers and cool mountain nights produce grapes rich in flavour but retaining a refreshing crispness. To make the most of these natural advantages, they've built a lavish, high-tech winery where winemaker, Patricia Gonzalez, created this cool-fermented unoaked Chardonnay. Golden, fresh and brimming over with attractive pineapple, citrus, melon and peach flavours. Ideal with grilled fish or delicately spicy shrimps.

Marthinus Chenin Blanc 2006
Marthinus Chenin Blanc 2006 - £6.29
Price on from Laithwaites.
The multi award-winning Bovlei winery has been at the forefront of the Cape's wine revolution, which has seen South Africa become a ''cutting edge wine producing country'', according to The Independent. This refreshing white is named after Marthinus 'Tiny' Broodryk who was winemaker at Bovlei for over 15 years. Now winemaker Frank Meaker has joined the team and the winery is going from strength to strength - as shown by their amazing medal collection! Deliciously zesty, with plentiful citurs aromas and generous tropical fruit on the finish. A great match to grilled seafood or a luxury fish pie!

White River Chenin Blanc 2006
White River Chenin Blanc 2006 - £6.19
Price on from Laithwaites.
Made by De Wet Lategan, one of the Cape's best young winemakers, this single estate Chenin Blanc is a lime-filled star. One sip shows why South Africa has developed a worldwide reputation for this traditional Loire variety. Mouthwatering freshness and pure, crisp fruit has kept you (and us!) coming back to this South African gem - it's been our favourite Cape white for a decade. Pale lemon yellow in colour, with fresh lemon and grapefruit aromas. Crisp and tangy on the finish, with a trace of tropical guava, it makes a wonderful partner to barbecued fish or cold roast chicken.

Berton Hoare Lane Chenin Blanc Verdelho 2006
Berton Hoare Lane Chenin Blanc Verdelho 2006 - £6.29
Price on from Laithwaites.
Bob Berton, dynamic winemaker and old friend, has left behind some of Australia's finest estates to branch out on his own - setting up his own boutique winery. A delighted Bob is now able to produce the wines he really wants to make - original and harmonious blends that throw out the rulebook to discover delicious new flavours. Hoare Lane is a refreshing, fruity combination of the Loire's traditional grape, crisp Chenin Blanc, Aussie favourite Verdelho and a dash of tropical Chardonnay. Aromas of kiwi fruit with melon, ripe peach and pear favours ... a fruit explosion with a hint of vanilla. Crisp green apple and citrus keep it mouthwatering and fresh. Ideal on its own or served with fish and chips. Great with friends.

Berton Weigh Station Chenin Blanc 2006
Berton Weigh Station Chenin Blanc 2006 - £6.29
Price on from Laithwaites.
Aussie Bob Berton is an old friend who has made some of our favourite wines (think Willy Willy!). He has now invested in a cellar all of his own, and this white is one of his first releases. Chenin Blanc is a hugely versatile but under-rated grape. Best known in France's Loire Valley, it's capable of producing wines in a massive range of styles - all with a captivating and refreshing vibrancy. In Australia's warm climate, this grape stays crisp, fruity and fresh. Pale straw in colour with aromas of lime, passionfruit and apple tart. Generous passionfruit and kiwi flavours. Delicious on its own, or enjoyed with warm lime and coriander chicken salad, creamy fish dishes or simply cold meats.

Sentiero Riesling 2005
Sentiero Riesling 2005 - £8.29
Price on from Laithwaites.
If you like refreshing whites, you'll love this pristine, high-altitude Riesling from the Flessati family. Sentiero is named after the spiral footpath that snakes its way through the vineyard, visible from the road running from Verona to Trento. With warm days and cool nights, the vineyards are ideal for creating crisp, aromatic white wines. Invigorating mountain air helps give this dry Riesling a fresh mouthwatering appeal. Bright and appetising with crisp flavours of green apple, a touch of lime and tongue-tingling freshness. Like all great Riesling, classic petrol edges lie in wait to develop. Enjoy as an aperitif, or serve with streamed fresh asparagus or grilled fish with a light herb sauce.
