Pere la Force Cabernet Merlot 2005
Pere la Force Cabernet Merlot 2005 - £6.29
Price on from Laithwaites.
''Offering some of the most dynamic, terroir-driven wines in France'' (The Independent), the South has undergone something of a revolution over the last decade or so. Winemakers are now enjoying the freedom to experiment with grape varieties previously never seen in the region, and this deliciously fruity Cabernet Merlot from the Oc is a superb example of one of the 'new generation' Southern French wines. Ripe bramble and blackcurrant flavours from the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in the blend, and smooth plum notes from the Merlot. With a hint of liquorice and warm spice, this is perfect with rare beef or mature cheeses.

Wrangle Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2004
Wrangle Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2004 - £11.39
Price on from Laithwaites.
85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, skilfully crafted in a charming and food-friendly style. For Aussie lovers, this wine makes a great change from Shiraz! After years of working the famous Rosemount Winery, becoming in the process, one of the Australia's best-known winemakers, Philip Shaw set up on his own with a vineyard he had bought way back in the 1980s. Orange is a beautiful place with very distinct seasons - not something that other Australian wine regions can generally lay claim to. Its cool climate status means the wines are elegant and fragrant - yet still with that benchmark Australian ripeness. Lovely minty Cabernet with ripe blackcurrant fruit and firm yet smooth tannins. Serve with hearty stews, roast leg of lamb or tender steaks.

Chateau Maison Blanche 2005
Chateau Maison Blanche 2005 - £10.39
Price on from Laithwaites.
''Bordeaux 2005 - the best vintage in 10, 50, even 100 years!'' (Decanter) ... this Merlot-rich gem is the fullest, smoothest and most succulent release we've tried from this estate thanks to 'perfect 2005'. Chateau Maison Blanche has 17 hectares of vines, planted with 67% Merlot and 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, which is unusual as most Left Bank wines are Cabernet dominated. As a result, the wines tend to be very round and soft in character. The vines are now 25 years old, and at the optimum maturity for producing really concentrated flavours. The current generation of the Bouey family have made changes in vineyard management to improve qualityand similarly, have made investments in the cellar too. The wine is matured in oak barrels for ten months. This Merlot-based claret has a good, deep colour and a lovely soft mouthfeel, with toasty oak aromas and flavours of damsons mulberries and blackcurrants. It will be delicious with roast meats, especially lamb with garlic, game dishes such as venison or rabbit with prunes.

Wolvehoek Merlot Cabernet 2006 - £7.39

Dating back to 1784, this high altitude winery, nestling near the summit of the spectacular Groenberg Mountain, is the envy of grape growers for miles around. The contrast between warm days and cool nights accentuates the finest aromatic qualities of the grapes. This superb Merlot Cabernet was crafted at the nearby Bovlei cellars by Frank Meaker whose famous grandfather, Paul Sauer, made wine at the great Kanonkop estate. Ever since he was a lad, Frank knew he would one day make fine wines of his own. With marvellous new world ripeness and the elegance of a fine claret, this oak-aged cuvee brims with blackcurrant, plum and tobacco complexity. Serve with roast beef, rare flame-grilled fillet steak or a salt-encrusted haunch of capretto.

2007 is one of Chile's best vintages yet - ''the quality is great'' says Wine Spectator - and the wines from this stunning year are hallmarked by concentration and elegance ... qualities which you'll find in this joyous, richly plummy new Merlot. It's made by Don Cayetano, certainly one of the best-value estates in Chile. The Don Cayetano story began when the family 'rescued' prime, high altitude vineyards from an old estate in the Colchagua Valley. They went on to plant Sauvignon, Cabernet, Merlot and other internationally adored grape varieties. Decades later, under the direction of expert winemaker Luis Felipe Edwards, Don Cayetano is ''one of Colchagua Valley's strongest projects'' (Wine International), and you can now enjoy the rewards of all the family's hard work - and the bounties of a perfect harvest ... ''Deep ruby in colour, with intense strawberry and plum fruit aromas. Delightfully smooth and full, it's great enjoyed on its own or with grilled meats and pasta dishes.''

Price on from Laithwaites.
Domaine d'Aubaret is a smart buy if you love the depth of good Bordeaux and the value of southern France. This fine estate in acclaimed Faugeres is owned by the respected, aptly named Bonfils family. All three 'good sons' of Jean-Michel play a part - vineyard expert Jerome, Olivier the winemaker and Laurent the sales manager - the easiest job, say his brothers, as the wine almost sells itself, especially at this price! Aromas of ripe plums, cassis and tobacco. Merlot gives the wine its succulent berry fruit while Cabernet adds depth and backbone (this grape marriage is behind many classic clarets). So smooth and mellow after a year in premium oak and perfect with roast beef.

Rusty Goat Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
Rusty Goat Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 - £6.55
Price on from Laithwaites.
If you've ever been to the Australian outback, you'll know about that famous red soil (if not, think Ayers Rock and you'll be on the right track). And if you've driven around the tiny county of Warburn you may have seen the odd sight of hundreds of rusty-looking goats - their coats tinted by the red dust. Antonio Sergi, Warburn Estate's lead man, is also owner of the goats ... hence his affection for the name! The rich, red soil does have more important uses too - helping deliver outstanding Merlot and Cabernet grapes. Wine lovers the world over know of South Australia's legendary 'terra rosa' soil that produces such superb wines in the Coonawarra. In New South Wales, near Warburn Estate, the soil is very similar giving the vines the great drainage they need. Left on the vine longer to achieve maximum ripeness, this soft, silky wine is filled with aromas of red fruits, plums with a hint of oak. Lovely fruity flavours of redcurrant and plum with a touch of spice. Perfect for barbeque or Italian food.
