Ravenswood Old Hill Vineyard Zinfandel
Ravenswood Old Hill Vineyard Zinfandel - £30.00
Price on from Laithwaites.
A superb wine from the legendary Joel Peterson of Ravenswood. The fruit for this exceptional Zinfandel comes from the Old Hill Vineyard, planted over a century ago and restored by forward-thinking Otter Teller. When millionaire Teller took over the vineyard in 1981 it lay in ruin yet he ignored advice to grub it up, fumigate and start again. Instead, he cleared the brush with a dragline, left a natural cover of grass and stimulated vine growth with foliar kelp, relying on ladybugs and praying mantises to control pests. Far ahead of his time, Teller rejected the use of chemical herbicides and fertilizers and quickly established one of the most remarkable organic vineyards in California. This wonderful wine shows blackberry, black pepper, vanilla, coffee, smoky and mint flavours. It's generous, aromatic and incredibly smooth. Serve with game casserole, lamb shanks or char-grilled steaks.

Made along very organic lines, this mouthwateringly crisp white marries gently spicy Torrontes (Argentina's speciality white) with racy Sauvignon. The area is doubly blessed thanks to a climate ideal for vines. Warm days and cool, dry nights in the high-altitude vineyards ensure a tremendously long ripening period. Casa Del Rio Verde Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 - £5.99
Price on from Laithwaites.

It was created in 1993, and has won many awards in its short life, including six gold medals at the Challenge International du Vin at Blaye-Bourg and four trophies at the Citadelles du Vin in Bordeaux. Adolfo Hurtado is chief winemaker; he joined the company when he was 26 and has twice been awarded 'Winemaker of the Year' by the Chilean Food and Wine writers association. Any live pests that do appear are removed courtesy of the cellar's flock of geese! Deep, dark and overflowing with rich cassis flavours, the sumptuous red is certainly one to savour.
