El Bombero
El Bombero - £39.90
Price on from Laithwaites.
Mighty El Bombero has been your voted No.1 more times than any other wine, and judges awarded it 'Best in Class' Trophy at the International Wine and Spirits Competition 2008 for the second year running! It's the winning combination of 15% power and velvety richness - usually associated with Chateauneuf-du-Pape or Australian Barossa Shiraz - that makes it so delicious ... especially at such a low price! In the remote hills of Cari?ena, shepherds have tended old vines since Roman times, a world away from the modern wine trade. No fancy chateaux here, just patience as long hours of sunshine and painfully low yields turn each Garnacha grape into a knot of deep, rich flavour. Deeper and richer than ever in 2007! Vibrant ruby-purple in colour and billowing ripe blackcurrant aromas. Profound plum, cherry and succulent blackberry kept silky-smooth by the soft 15% alcohol. Serve with roast lamb or steaks - in large glasses please!

Blanc Neuf La Bastide 2006
Blanc Neuf La Bastide 2006 - £8.39
Price on from Laithwaites.
Proudly showing its 'Best-in-Class' accolade, this brand new, golden white has real Grand Cru pedigree. It's made by Olivier Bayle (ex Lafite Rothschild!) and is so much like white Chateauneuf-du-Pape that our staff call it 'Baby Beaucastel Blanc' (a nod to the region's top estate). Olivier's big, rich reds have always been a huge hit - which is why he was delighted to take up our challenge to make a white every bit as serious. And what a triumph! A classic Rhone blend - Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne - barrel-fermented to add toasty richness to the crisp peach and apricot. ''This is beautifully balanced and creamily textured wine with an alluring, peachy nose and succulent honeysuckle and pear palate. A grand wine designed for fish main courses or roast pork, it is a real treat.'' Matthew Jukes

La Curio The Nubile Grenache Shiraz 2006
La Curio The Nubile Grenache Shiraz 2006 - £14.39
Price on from Laithwaites.
Luxurious Shiraz has become the heart and soul of winemakers Adam Hooper and Elena Golakova and they've become true experts - winning the Australian Winemakers Trophy in 2005 for their efforts! The Nubile is their Aussie take on classic French wine Chateauneuf-du-Pape, as they added a portion of Grenache - made from wonderfully concentrated grapes grown on gnarled, 80-year-old vines - to their spicy, bramble fruit Shiraz. The result is a seriously powerful, blockbuster of a wine! Huge ripe bramble fruit and pepper mingles with spicy plum, clove and vanilla, finishing long, full and deliciously peppery. Open the bottle an hour before drinking and preferably decant to allow the flavours to open out fully.

Merlot Reserve de Villecours
Merlot Reserve de Villecours - £37.74
Price on from Laithwaites.
Savour this exclusive blend made for us by Benoit Blancheton - one of France's most illustrious winemakers. Benoit has made wine in some of the country's best vineyards including Clos de l'Oratoire in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, where his wine was awarded an impressive 93-points by Robert Parker. Made from premium Merlot grapes from the famed Languedoc region of La Clape - which according to Jancis Robinson has ''one of the most tasteable terroirs anywhere'' - this soft and silken red is brimming with smoky fruit character. Elegant and refined, it would be a great partner to roast lamb or herby sausages.

Speargrass Shiraz 2005
Speargrass Shiraz 2005 - £6.29
Price on from Laithwaites.
Classically warming, full, spicy red from Down Under - this is Aussie Shiraz at its distinctive best. Made at the awesome Buronga Hill winery near Mildura on the River Murray, it's a perfect example of why Aussie Shiraz is such a popular style. Given that senior winemaker Kim Hart has worked at Alkoomi in Western Australia and worked a vintage at Chateau Palmer in Margaux, it's no surprise that quality is so consistently excellent ... and what's more, the wine is much better value than many more famous Australian brands. Deep red crimson in colour, spicy, jammy fruit aromas. Smooth and juicy ripe plum flavour and a fresh, brambly finish. In a blind tasting the 2002 vintage of this wine beat a host of famous, illustrious names including Masi Amarone (#18), Cote-Rotie (#20), Chateauneuf-du-Pape (#13)!

Chapoutier La Croix des Grives 2006
Chapoutier La Croix des Grives 2006 - £10.39
Price on from Laithwaites.
Voluptuous, smooth and deliciously rich, La Croix des Grives displays the dedication to quality that has seen the reputation of the Chapoutier family estate rise to the very top among Rhone producers. Family head Michael Chapoutier keeps fruit yields seriously low and handpicks only the ripest, old vine Syrah and Grenache - the famous, full-flavoured grapes of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. And the sun-soaked 2006 vintage boosted flavour concentration to amazing levels - ''extraordinary'' says Robert Parker ... and we'd have to agree! This exclusive cuvee has complex mouthfuls of red fruit and lovely hints of smoky spice. Wild herb aromas with velvet-smooth brambly plumb flavours, this is world class quality at a realistic price. ''If you love the Rhone - and you'd be crazy not to - now is the time to buy!'' (The Independent).

Les Rouquets Merlot 2006
Les Rouquets Merlot 2006 - £6.29
Price on from Laithwaites.
There are many reasons why this superb value red is such an exciting find and so incredibly delicious! For any fan of St-Emilion, Pomerol, or southern French gems, it's a must. It comes from the eastern reaches of the Pyrenees on the lower slopes of the Canigou mountains - an area boasting some of the best terroir in the south of France. 'Rouquet' is the Catalan word for rounded stone - just like the famous galets of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the rocky vineyards here are strewn with them. Great for the vine which must dig deep to extract nutrients. The winemakers are two of the south's most talented. Pierrick Harang is a top graduate of the Montpellier wine school and with experience at California's Mumm winery. Jean-Michel Barcelo is a highly reputed consultant advising 15 up-and-coming estates. Deep garnet red with liquorice, black pepper and summer fruit character. Really expressive and with just a hint of spicy oak. Smooth and rounded. Best with a rich cassoulet or herby oven-roasted vegetables.

Domaine Juliette Avril 2006
Domaine Juliette Avril 2006 - £14.39
Price on from Laithwaites.
Steeped in winemaking tradition since before the French Revolution and based in the village centre, this unassuming yet quality-driven estate is at the heart of Chateauneuf-du-Pape in every sense. Winemaker Xavier Vignon uses semi-organic vine management and lengthy fermentation to extract maximum colour and flavour from almost the full gamut of permitted grapes. Deep, complex and thrilling - your guests will love you for sharing this.
