Haut-Cabirou is the kind of red everyone loves - warming, gorgeously smooth and brooding with 15% alcohol. The previous vintage scooped Gold in its own back yard plus a coveted Seal of Approval in London ... now you can secure your share of the latest release ... at a cracking low price. It comes from the village of Maury, high up in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Their most famous wine is a fortified, sweet red made just like traditional Port. A few years back, our buyers visited the cellar and were offered an unfortified glassful, straight from the barrel. And what a glassful! So warming and smooth we snapped it up there and then! Succulent Grenache from ancient, high altitude vineyards. Seductive red berry aromas and masses of deep plum and cassis flavours. A quiet tip-off back in 1996 alerted us to this small domaine, inland from the stylish medieval port of La Rochelle and whose whites are kept beautifully fresh thanks to the nearby Atlantic. And our buying team are raving about the 2006 Chardonnay - an impressive follow-up to the exceptional 2005. This new release approaches Chablis levels of intensity and purity - very good wine at a modest price. Bright green gold with crisp aromas of freshly-sliced apple and citrus leading to rich fruit flavours with a well-balanced, creamy finish.

De Wet Lategan is the chief winemaker, while his brothers Louis and Plum manage the vineyards under the watchful eye of their father, Prop Lategan. Touriga Nacional is one of the principal grapes used to make Port, and it's really taking off in the sun-soaked vineyards of the New World!
