Back Shed Shiraz Grenache 2005
Back Shed Shiraz Grenache 2005 - £11.49
Price on from Laithwaites.
Hugh Johnson's wasn't the only one to be impressed by the sheer scale of this colossal Shiraz (that's part of his tasting note above). The judges at the International Wine Challenge awarded it a Silver medal. So it's clearly not just big, it's beautiful too. It comes from the Redheads wine studio - an establishment that is every bit as extraordinary as the wines it produces. A former wine bar, this cosy boutique winery retains some of the creature comforts of its previous incarnation. Where you might expect an impromptu seat fashioned from a wine barrel, you find instead a red leather sofa where maverick winemakers sit and hatch their next innovative project. It's a place that flies in the face of convention and amidst the jovial buzz of activity, you might also think, by the seat of its pants. But fly it does ... and the results are spectacular. Best with either spicy foods - chorizo-laced pizza, chilli con carne, or a mild vindaloo ... or char-grilled sausages or peppered steaks.

Wilson Gunn Shiraz 2005
Wilson Gunn Shiraz 2005 - £15.99
Price on from Laithwaites.
Wilson Gunn Shiraz was crafted at our RedHeads studio by Henry Laithwaite, who learned his trade under the expert tuition of legendary McLaren Vale winemaker Michael Fragos. Henry follows the RedHeads philosophy of making, in his own words, ''ultra-rich, complex and fascinating wines ... good enough to stand up with the best in the world, without the extortionate price tag''. His weighty, raspberry-packed Shiraz certainly lives up to Henry's expectations - world-famous wine expert Robert Parker gave it 92 points, Decanter magazine gave it 4 stars AND it won a coveted Silver medal at the International Wine Challenge. A seriously good buy! Rich, powerful and inky purple in colour. Spicy bramble fruit merges with soft, vanilla oak flavours. Delicious enjoyed with grilled or barbecued meats and strong cheeses.

Killibinbin Shiraz 2006
Killibinbin Shiraz 2006 - £23.49
Price on from Laithwaites.
Killibinbin - a small, boutique winery set in the Adelaide Hills region of Australia - was founded by self-confessed wine nuts Wayne Anderson and Liz Blank. After years of working in the hospitality industry, the couple decided to throw caution to the wind and dedicate their lives to producing top-notch wines. They started out with ''no vineyard, no grapes, no winery, no winemaker, no money, but loads of gumption!'' Their philosophy about winemaking is equally as simple - ''it's all about the fruit'' - and they keep to traditional methods. The guys at the RedHeads studio share this approach, so the Killibinbin wines are made here. Gentle, patient winemaking draws extraordinary colour and texture from the hand-picked Shiraz ... you'll find vanilla and oak spice, chocolaty, blackberry fruit, coffee notes - so much going on. Silky, silky tannins and a mile-long finish ... little wonder Australian wine expert James Halliday gave it a fantastic 92 points. We think you'll love it too!

The Moonlighters Shiraz 2006
The Moonlighters Shiraz 2006 - £11.39
Price on from Laithwaites.
At the back of the Redheads Studio, guiding force Justin Lane's treating a few barrels of very special McLaren Vale Shiraz with the same lavish care as his 95-Parker-point reds. When he siphoned a few glasses from barrel to see what the assembled crew - us along with a many more hard-bitten wine people - thought, there were no polite words for the sake of it ... ''It's a beaut, son'' ... ''I'd rather drink tht than Grange'' ... ''Your Pom mates are a lucky bunch'' ... Justin's christened this 'The Moonlighters', for that's just what Redheads is all about - giving local winemakers the chance to make the wines they (rather than their big bosses) want to make. ''Its deep, velvety core of blackberry and raspberry lasts forever, set off by toasty spice. Deserves a juicy steak, or sit back with a glass solo.''

While their Langhorne Creek reds receive rave reviews, this black, inky, beefy Malbec is an even rarer, more exciting beast. Deep bramble flavours merge with toasty oak and hints of liquorice. Long, full and seriously smooth ... a wonderfully heart-warming drop.

Pikkara Shiraz 2006
Pikkara Shiraz 2006 - £19.39
Price on from Laithwaites.
Nat McMurtrie was born in the oldest pub in McLaren Vale, on McMurtrie Road. He's a 6'4'' 28-vintage veteran, revelling in the chance to make pure Shiraz from just a few precious vine rows in his beloved corner of Oz. After painstaking hand-picking and sorting, the grapes were transported to the RedHeads studio where Nat created just 160 cases of this formidably dense Shiraz with real character and superb flavour intensity. Grab hold of it while you can! Powerful mix of red berry fruit and bitter dark chocolate and coffee flavours balanced by fine, supple tannins and a lingering spice box and liquorice finish. Open the bottle an hour before drinking and preferably decant to allow the flavours to open out fully. Partner with hearty meat dishes.
