Roux Pinot Noir Matthieu de Brully Tastevine 2004
Roux Pinot Noir Matthieu de Brully Tastevine 2004 - £7.89
Price on from Laithwaites.
Burgundy is home to world's finest Pinot Noir. Top examples can cost an arm and a leg but occasionally you find a wine that 'ticks all the boxes' (fragrant red berry fruit, layers complexity and smooth, supple tannins) at a price that belies its quality. This is one such wine. Young winemaker Matthieu Roux honed his skills at Domaine Drouhin Oregon, the USA's Pinot Noir hotspot, as well as in Australia before bringing his international expertise back to Burgundy to great acclaim. Awarded coveted Tastevinage status by international experts at the famous Clos de Vougeot, this wine can hold its own in illustrious company yet remarkably costs under #7 a bottle. Andre Roux Old Vine Grenache 2004 - £7.99
Price on from Laithwaites.
Made by our great friend and veteran Rhone producer Andre Roux this massive Grenache has made a big impact in previous years in the 'Red Wines of the Year' rollcall of honour - scooping 'Best Big Red'. And at 15% - you can't get much bigger! The fruit was selected from the hillside vineyards of Chusclan where exposure to the Rhone sun ripened the grapes to a fullness beyond compare. Handpicked and carefully transported to the winery (to avoid being damaged), they were then treated to Andre's masterful winemaking skill. Round, warming and dangerously moreish. Intense red fruit aromas and surprisingly silky, rich, dark fruit. Long-lasting flavours, no harsh tannins. Delightful!

Groenendal Vineyards Chenin Blanc
Groenendal Vineyards Chenin Blanc - £57.99
Price on from Laithwaites.
Chenin Blanc has been grown in the Cape since the first settlers arrive from the Loire Valley in the 1660s. Despite the recent switch to more ubiquitous international varieties (Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc), Chenin remains the definitive Cape white. Always distinctive, in the right hands it is capable of elegance, complexity and longevity. Groenendal was among the first 15 farms established in the Wellington area 300 years ago. Chenin has been grown there for the last century. The current owner Herman Le Roux's great grand father emigrated from Blois in the Loire which is the centre of Chenin Blanc cultivation in France. Today the estate's wines are vinified by Franck Meaker at Wellington's Bolvei Cellars. Pale gold with light green tinges. Ripe peach, citrus and guava aromas. This is a really well balanced wine with a whack of fresh fruit flavours, lovely harmonious structure and a crisp lingering finish. Especially recommended with grilled fish and seafood kebabs.

Les Abeilles 2004
Les Abeilles 2004 - £7.99
Price on from Laithwaites.
One taste of this Gold medal heritage red and you'll see why Andre Roux - a veteran of some 67 vintages - is something of a Rhone legend.Customers first met him in 1973 when we broke the budget with a huge shipment of six cases! Since then he's earned the limelight for the little village of Chusclan, over the river from the more famous and expensive vineyards of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. And when he retired in 1990 we had to fly over and talk him out of it on your behalf! Dark purple with spicy forest fruit aromas. Gold medal depth of smoky blackcurrant, brambles and herbs. Drink to 2007. ''The Rhone ... the most exciting of France's classic red wine regions'' Anthony Rose, The Independent.
