Chateau La Tour Carnet 2005
Chateau La Tour Carnet 2005 - £23.49
Price on from Laithwaites.
Nestled in the heart of Bordeaux's Haut-Medoc, Chateau La Tour Carnet is a fantastically historic estate that comes equipped with its own medieval castle and moat! Skilled winemaker Bernard Magrez owns the property and in recent years has dramatically improved wine-quality - ''One can't say enough about the fabulous job proprietor Bernard Magrez has done'' (Robert Parker). One of the secrets to Bernard's success is his shrewd decision to have renowned oenologist Michel Rolland at the helm of the wine's production. With Michel's help, Bernard is able to produce sublime, top-shelf claret that punches well above its price tag. ''A blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it reveals an inky/purple color as well as a powerful nose of scorched earth, acacia flowers, blueberries, and black currants. Displaying an old style concentration with modern-styled tannins, it possesses fabulous richness, a full-bodied, powerful mouthfeel, terrific precision, and a wonderful sweetness to the fruit as well as tannin.'' Robert Parker

''Deep ruby/purple in colour and a sweet nose of black fruits intermixed with notions of smoke, cold steel, earth, and subtle background wood. Chateau Leoville-Poyferre 2004
Chateau Leoville-Poyferre 2004 - £29.00
Price on from Laithwaites.
Awarded an impressive 93-points by Robert Parker, this benchmark Saint Julien offers fantastic value for money! The Cuvelier family has owned Chateau Leoville-Poyferre since 1920. Just recently, they've begun to modernise the estate - leading to a dramatic rise in the quality of their wine. Chief winemaker Didier Cuvelier, spared no expense with his Grand Vin - using tiny quantities of highly concentrated fruit as well as the finest oak barrels. Robert Parker ranks this wine ''among the stars of the appellation'' - an accolade some clarets twice its price don't receive! ''Made in a more floral, supple, Margaux-like style, the deep ruby/purple-hued 2004 Leoville Poyferre exhibits sweet, broad flavors, and plenty of tannin lurking beneath the surface. However, the abundant cherry, blackcurrant and smoke notes obscure the tannic clout.'' Robert Parker.

The result is fantastic - a claret with all the hallmark elegance of Mouton-Rothschild at a fraction of the price! Robert Parker is a big fan of the wine, especially this terrific vintage - ''The 2004 is elegant with fine tannin, sweet raspberry and black cherry fruit as well as hints of herbs and new oak. It possesses that crunchy, juicy fruit character.''

The monumental reds of Madiran can take decades to hit their peak - but are worth the wait! This one offers waves of luscious, spicy black fruit and breathtaking complexity. Enjoy now or keep. The Madiran region is in the southwest of France and standing in the vineyards you can plainly see the Pyrenees rising majestically on the horizon. The dominant grape variety here is Tannat - rich in tannin just as the name suggests. But is it also rich in fruit and over time, the wines of Madiran evolve into splendid classics. But, if its instant gratification you're after, you're in luck! This wine has had thirteen years to mellow and evolve and is now, at last, ready to be enjoyed. Concentrated notes of ripened berry fruits (blackberry, redcurrant, blueberry) with subtle hints of liquorice and peony, plums and sweet, fresh earthiness shine through. A very fine, firm yet elegant wine, best served with steak and kidney pie, roast lamb or hearty casseroles.

Don Cayetano Carmenere 2006
Don Cayetano Carmenere 2006 - £5.99
Price on from Laithwaites.
Brought to Chile in the 19th century, Carmenere was mistaken for Merlot until the 1990's due to its rarity. Nearly extinct is its native Bordeaux, it narrowly avoided being lost forever. Fortunately the abundance of sunshine in Colchagua brings out the best in this soft, dark grape, especially in these expert hands. Renowned for its quality, Luis Felipe Edwards' estate is set in a small valley in Colchagua. Abudent sunshine tempered by cool, refreshing nights make the climate here perfect for their old vines. The cooler, longer 2006 growing season - due to the influence of La Ni?a, the counteract to El Ni?o - has given us wines of great aromatic intensity and richness. Seasoned with Petit Verdot, another Bordeaux native, giving a dose of spice and tannin, this wine has deep ruby colour. Velvety, full of ripe red berry fruits creamy toffee notes with a hint of spice. Enjoy with garlic-roasted lamb, spicy empanadas (a Chilean version of pasties!) or simply it on its own!
